We've got 'em - our hearing aids, that is

This afternoon my husband and I had our first hearing aids fitted. We weren’t looking forward to this, more because of what it says about our age and infirmities than for any other particular reason. But we’ve agreed that it’s necessary and so we’re forging ahead trying to cultivate a very positive attitude towards this new challenge. Now we're home our keyboards seem rattly, our mouse clicks much louder than necessary, our footsteps are funny and even turning the tap is almost an assault on the senses. We have three hearing aids between us and we’re not to get them muddled. We’ve put our names on our little boxes so hopefully all will be well. On the positive side Vince says I’ve stopped mumbling and I’m pleased that I’m only having to say things once instead of at least twice. And just think - if I really need to, I'll be able to turn him off! What joy! Photo of some grapes which are now for sale in our shops. Nothing to do with hearing aids.

My mother pulled the hearing aids off her ears all the time complaining that there was too much noise in the room.

Apparently our brains have to relearn to ignore unnecessary sounds - I wonder if that means Vince?

@JudyEv You should ask if there is a way to turn off only "some" sounds.

I've had hearing aids for a few months now (both ears) but ruined one when I forgot to take them out before getting in the shower. Silly me.

@JudyEv I did get in the shower once but got away with one of them thank goodness. Oh yes, the batteries won't last long unless you disconnect at night.

@jaboUK Ours should last about 10 days providing we disconnect them at night. It's just another habit to get into.

We need to ring today and get them included on our insurance. I can imagine once you're used to them it would be easy to get in the shower with them. Last night (our first night with them), we forgot to disconnect the batteries.

The problem with hearing aides is that they can't filter out unimportant noise. The healthy ear and the brain can do this. You only hear what you concentrate on. But with a hearing aide you go to a concert to listen to music and when your neighbour is unpacking a sweet, the noise the wrapping paper makes nearly splits your ears. I have no idea how to overcome this. My mother and my husband both had hearing aides but rarely used them because of this problem.

@MALUSE It would have been nice if they invented hearing aids with volume control via remote.

I didn't know that these hearing aids are that sensitive. They are therefore boon and bane.

Lol the last paragraph is the best! It's great you both got them together as I do think that probably makes you feel a little better that you both need one. I could probably use one as I have hearing damage from so many ear infections as a kid but I'm not willing to get one until I can't hear anymore at all.

@shaggin If Vince decides to keep his after the month's trial he gets a remote control. I feel like going on about how he can hardly have his ears far enough away from his head to need a remote but apparently the remote is a bit bigger than the aids and easier to adjust than the tiny buttons.

Perhaps if you let your hearing get really bad the adjustment might be harder - just sayin'. I'm pleased we're in this together as we both keep saying how loud everything is and they we're able to laugh about it. It does give new meaning to giving him the silent treatment doesn't it?

It's amazing how loud sounds are when you can hear them. We were talking about hearing aids at the pool this morning. I've had my ears tested, but so far, I don't need them, though my kids think I do.

@JudyEv No, I do my best to hear what people say to me, but if they're going to mumble or not talk loud enough for me to hear them, it can be a problem. The audiologist told me my hearing is good.

I remember when my mother=in=law got her hearing aids. She hated them, she wouldn't wear them and got made when everyone didn't want to keep repeating what they were saying. I am starting to lose a bit of my hearing. If they say I need hearing aids I will happily wear them. I want to know what's going on around me. I hope your adjustment to them is quick and easy.

We have put off getting them because we've heard so many bad things about them but now we have them we are determined to make the best of it and get used to them. Vince has gone to golf with his small group of friends and they go for coffee after so it will be interesting to 'hear' how he finds them in such a setting.

@HazySue I'm really surprised that you don't actually feel them in your year or behind your ear. It's all going well at the moment. Vin was quite impressed at his group coffee. Saturday evening we'll be in a bigger crowd for a dinner so that will be a bigger test. We can't expect great things under these circumstances as our aids are quite basic. However on the plus side we are not often in big groups.

It is part of aging gracefully though I am in denial at times! I recall one of my relatives who told me she agrees she is hard of hearing but her husband, though worse off, is in denial! I now allow my inner knowing to overrule my mind when it comes to health issues - siva

Love grapes! Good luck with your hearing aids. My neighbor today just spoke about hearing aids. She lost the hearing in one ear, her left ear, so I got to suggesting hearing aid...too expensive she says, but I pushed ahead and said check her benefits for Medicare to see if she can get one for herself. My Mom was hard of hearing. Before she passed she went in and out of the hospital. The nurses would find me and looking so alarmed, they ask me to go to her room for they have questions for me. Figuring that something was wrong, I quickly went to her room. The nurses said we keep asking your Mother questions and she doesn't answer...I told them she is hard of hearing. Just make sure she knows that you want to speak to her and she'll answer them. They now relaxed got to speak with my Mom. I know how hard it is for the person who can't hear as well as for the people around them. If you can't hear them, make sure they know you are speaking to them, this will help greatly to communicate with them. Hearing aids are essential to daily life.

@JudyEv Yes, I noticed this with my Mother. It's sad for they need to be active and are so beloved. You know what...I saw in Walgreens in as seen on tv aisle, a hearing aid that you don't have to go to the doctor to get. You can see if it's affordable for you and I hope they got it at your neighborhood Walgreens too. They didn't have this when my Mother was alive or at least I didn't know of it.
