A place for a private conversation

We just had two nights in Perth, our capital where we attended the 50th anniversary of the Association of School Bursars. Bursars are now more commonly known as business administrators and deal with all the issues at a school apart from anything to do with the actual teaching or teachers.
We stayed with a friend who has an apartment in a converted warehouse in the port of Fremantle. The warehouse once held most of Western Australia’s wool-clip till it was auctioned off and shipped off all over the world.
The security in this block of apartments is mind-boggling and it seems you can’t get in or out of anywhere without pressing a button or swiping a card. The sign on this door says ‘Communication Cupboard’ and we had to wonder if it was a place where you could go if you needed to have a private conversation. But I guess it just houses a heap of electronic equipment.
By the way, in a noisy, group environment, our hearing aids rose to the occasion and we didn't get swamped with noise. Yay for them!

Is there a reason for so much security there? Is it in a bad part of the city where crime is high? Or is it just the way things are these days? Here, it seems that anything new that is being built has security cameras everywhere watching you. I guess that is a sign of the times as well. Hope you had a good time in Perth.

@moffittjc Except this time we went in with someone we didn't know then he only went so far and we were sort of stuck in no-man's land. Luckily we were able to phone our friend.

It's a bit like magic. I'm not sure it's made such a difference to me although i can hear 'small' noises that I was missing out on earlier. But I don't find Vince continually looking at me waiting for me to interpret for him when we're out. He goes off and talks without being so worried about being able to hear.

That is an amazing amount of security. Is it a dangerous place?
