If you received an unexpected monetary gift would you spend the money all on yourself or share it with others? Are there any advantages for those who share their wealth? Source- hackensackmeridian health.org Photo- everydaygettingbetter.com

Depends upon the amount.

Exactly and on the age of the person who receives the money. Young people still need to buy many things. Old people usually have got what they need.

Yes, I would share, surely with my husband, but also with a few people I know that would profit a lot of a little more money.

@dgobucks226 Helping strangers is most of the time better than helping someone of your family. You never have gratitude from your family member. This is something I learnt.

A very nice sentiment! I could not agree more with your reasoning and according to studies it can provides you with an intrinsic reward a good feeling inside. A person's gratitude for your generosity is a monetary reward in itself. Interestingly, some studies say giving to others is actually good for your health reducing stress and depression.

Yes, I would share. I only need so much and I don't need much.

I think things like giving to charities, people or the church provides us with a societal connection.

And I bet that sharing gives you a happy feeling inside, it does for me to help others in need.

I would probably take around 25% of it, and donate the rest to charity. If it's an "unexpected" monetary gift, that means I don't actually deserve it. I should be grateful if I get to keep a portion of it

An interesting way to look at it... I think things like giving to charities or the church provides us with a needed societal connection.

Actually, I tend to save money that I have rather than spend it.

Well, nothing wrong with that. You'll be ready for a "rainy day" necessity if one comes...

I did get an unexpected gift card for Christmas and was completely selfish. I used it for groceries.

I totally get that. But here is an interesting fact to consider: Some studies say giving to others is actually good for your health reducing stress and depression?

@dgobucks226 Yes, it is and I give whenever I can. The person who gave me the unexpected gift card for Christmas, gave it for my use, not to give to others. I knew that and wondered what I would do with it.

Hm. Interesting. Sometimes if small amount I will take people out to eat. If big amount I usually pay up a bill

@dgobucks226 It's nice, I feel like it takes some of the weight off of their shoulders. Sometimes (rarely) but sometimes I will hide a $1 in a $1 store for someone to find, too. I like to think that someone will find it - who was having a bad day and it will be just enough for them to buy a little extra treat

How does it feel when you treat others to a meal? According to a study in Current Directions in Psychological Science spending money on other people can make you feel happier.

I would share it too. To answer the second question- well, most of us have heard the expression "It is more blessed to give than to receive." To me, it just feels good and sharing is the right thing to do- especially with someone who has some true needs.

I do not share my wealth currently. But if I won the lottery, I certainly would. The problem is, really, that most people do not know the value of money, and so when you share with someone all they do is piss it away and sharing really accomplishes nothing. I live by an old mantra. Give a stupid person money and they will blow it. Give a smart person money and they will grow it. Simply giving someone money does nothing to improve their status if they don't know what to do with it.

Interesting... I'd have to side with you on that mantra.
