JOKE Spool of Thread to Needle:How are you doing? Needle to Spool : Sew Sew I thought of this joke the minute I stepped into the shop. The store prides itself on having clothing of every hue. I suppose that's why they chose this decor. I remember the small wooden cylinders around which yarns of various colours were wound up. One needed to have a lot, when the sewing machine was part of every household I knew. This was necessary to have the exact match ,whether to sew up the latest pattern in frocks or to darn the knee patch of the trousers that was a result of a day spent scrambling in the fields

I remember my Mum always had a pile of mending to do. Nothing was thrown out while it could possibly be mended or darned.

@responsiveme My grandmother always liked to be given socks to darn as she found it hard to keep herself occupied. However because her eyesight was failing, she would use contrasting colours to darn the socks. It didn't really matter as the socks were worn on the farm and not as 'best' socks.

@JudyEv thing is nowadays that would become a fashion too, maybe. My mother still sews a lot,she feels it is calming

I still have a sewing machine and a lot of spools of different colors, those that match the clothing we have.

When I was small my mother worked in a shop that made lingerie. I remember seeing along the wall all the huge spools of yarn in different colors. People who worked there for years and years wound up with emphazema from it. Not sure how it's spelled and auto correct isn't showing anything.

I have to check it up to see what it is Okay, I just checked it. The lungs get damaged. Was it because the yarn pieces got into their bodies?

Oh, that shop is so nice. The creativeness of the owner shows in how she made use of the big spools of threads in different colors, a decoration like thing like that.

I like your joke and I've never heard that one before, but I think it works better when reading it. I just shared it with my older daughter, first she looked at me and then after I spelled out the sew, she laughed. When I grew up and sewed my own clothes, I didn't have all the different hued threads, we made due to some degree. I mean for a while there I'd at least match the thread with the material, but when mending later I wasn't as concerned, Now I have about eight to ten basic colors and use those mainly even though I don't really mend much other than raising up pant legs for my husband's expensive pants for my daughter's wedding.

@responsiveme For most mending you don't want the color showing through anyway, so it's not a big deal unless you're using a bright color on a dark garment maybe not, but otherwise, I don't go out and buy a new thing of thread for each use. Not that it's that expensive, but I don't like running around from store to store.

Yes that joke is better read. My hubby just did some small sewing work on a coat,he is very particular about the matching. Not so much me,as long as I get the basic colour right.

This reminds me of the time when my father has his tailor shop. We had then a lot of sewing thread and machines besides the sewers.

Love your joke!! I haven't used a sewing machine in years but I do remember having many different spools of thread in all sorts of colors. I do have a small sewing kit on hand now for those small little mending jobs.

spools in my house are now used for small mending jobs too. Maybe it's because ready made clothes are so easily available now that the sewing machine has taken a background.

My aunt was a sewer and had spools upon spools of lovely colored threads. I enjoyed visiting her as a kid. She even made me some outfits and taught me how to sew. Now, everything goes to the tailor.

@responsiveme Just one small piece she did for my son. I wish I had taken some of the stuff she left, but I guess I was too distraught at her passing and my sister in law gave away all of it.
