Rain and maybe snow

We have had rain all morning and it may change to snow. Should have known it was coming, as I woke up with a headache around 3:30 a.m. Eventually I gave up and got up. I worked in the kitchen. I have made yogurt, and it is in the dehydrator, warming and culturing. I also made sausage gravy, and our lunch which was beef with red beans and rice. With that we had a microwaved sweet potato, cornbread and hot tea. Oh, also have done dishes. Time to do some more. After breakfast we chose to go run some errands we needed to do, in case the snow starts. It rained heavily. I tried to post from my phone. Not a success. I have also put together a breakfast casserole for the rest of the week. I think Bob will make hamburgers this evening. One day this week we will have "turkey pot pie". I still have some turkey and stuffing to eat as well. I guess we will not starve, even if we have a blizzard. Hope you guys are all comfortable and well fed.

I think it is my excuse to avoid worrying too much. I had a lot to catch up on from his time in the hospital.

We have been fortunate not to have wind with the snow and rain. It makes it not feel quite so cold.

I am thinking to the noon lunch, I think that today we are only going to have vegetables. I have 4 artichokes, I am going to steam them with garlic, olive oil and parsley.

I have never cooked artichokes, and have only ever had them in a hot dip with spinach. I bet I would like them. I use a lot of garlic.

@GardenGerty I used a lot of garlic to season my artichokes and they were delicious.

You were wise to stock up, even if it poured. Bob must be feeling well enough to do some cooking.

That is how he guarantees his burger is just how he likes it. I did all the prep work, slicing onions and such, but I was glad to let him man the skillet.

Cooking is one of his favorite things. He had to make two meals of his burger, though.

It sounds troublesome to go out today there. I also noticed that before it snows, it will rain hard.

I made bacon and eggs for breakfast. We have leftover macaroni and tuna salad and white bean and ham soup so we are covered as well though no snow coming here.

Very hearty. Hubby does not eat pasta, but I have some onhand for when he makes liver or chicken liver which I do not eat. I am working my way through my cooked meals and I am set for a few days.

Most of the routes we travel have been brined when they think snow and ice is coming.

We have snow coming in and are under a winter warning now, and what is it when you put yogurt in a dehydrator. I'm glad your not going to starve and I'm making chili tonight to keep us warm.

I made chili today as well. I explained on @maezee s response how I make yogurt. Yogurt is a fermented product and has to be kept warm or incubated while it is growing. My best place to keep it at an even temperature for several hours is to put it in the dehydrator at the lowest temperature.I figured I would need to explain it. A long time ago I had made a post about my method on here. I do not know if it is searchable now.

No it is not hard to make yogurt. There are many ways to keep it warm. I have a square dehydrator and the jars will fit inside, but there are lots of other ways to keep it about ninety degrees or so while the yogurt grows. I scald my milk in the microwave so I do not scorch it. I stir in extra dry milk powder. When it cools to around 90 or 95 I stir in a good brand of Greek yogurt, and put it in canning jars with lids. I turn on my dehydrator. I have used a cooler chest filled partially with hot water, and I have used a slow cooker with a water bath. My nephew says there is a recipe to make yogurt with an insta pot. My method usually takes 6-8 hours, and I make a little over two quarts at a time. I use it just to eat with fruit or I make smoothies, etc with it.

Due to erratic incomes over the years, especially when working in schools and having holidays and summers off I learned to keep a supply of food, buying things on special and labeling it.

Large portions of the US seem to have cold and snow right now, but it is January. Perhaps it will kill off some of the pests that come in summer.

Especially if the rain comes first and freezes to ice. We seem to have avoided that issue locally, it turned to slush rather quickly. We have not had to drive anywhere far.
