Farewell to the Bandit

Do you remember the series of funny movies “Smoky and the Bandit?” There was this terribly handsome dark-haired actor playing Bandit. It was Burt Reynolds and unfortunately, we lost him on September 6. 2018. He soon became a sex symbol. His costar in these movies was Sally Field and he once confessed to a magazine that she had been the true love of his life. Reynolds was always cast in macho kind of roles in movies like “Deliverance”, “The Longest Yard”, and “Hooper”. Years later in the 1980s, he made some bad role calls even tuning down the chance to play in “Die Hard”. Then in 1997, he was back on the screen in “Boogie Nights” and this role earned him his only Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. He made bad choices when it came to romance. He was known for his relationship with Dinah Shore but because he wanted children he turned to and married Loni Anderson. Even though they later divorced the marriage gave him his son Quinton. The last time I saw Reynolds on the big screen was in the movie “Striptease” with Demi Moore. I remember watching the movie and thinking who is that odd-looking old man on the screen. When I found out it was Reynolds I was shocked. He certainly did not age well. Who is a Burt Reynolds fan?

Yes I was a fan. Tony`s brother used to look like Burt but is a mental case so he got no where with the ladies.

I think the more apt question is, "Who isn't a Burt Reynolds fan?" He was so good and so underrated for most of his career but he was still the top box office draw for many years. You mentioned Sally...Who doesn't love Gidget?...so I'll skip her and mention Jerry Reed. He was the glue that held many of Burt's greatest movies together as well as providing the music for them.

Hmm ... maybe he was secretly a split identity of Burt Reynolds & ... Tom Selleck? Burt Lancaster?

It was one of my late father's idols. I am sure they are jamming in heaven now.
