Thanks to John Roberts, who came up with the idea, I've been counting down my favorite songs in country and rock that have "time" in the title. Having just stopped the clock on the rock countdown, it's time to close down the country side. You may not have seen this one coming, but there's no disputing its greatness. Here it is. #1: (I'd Be) A Legend in My Time - Don Gibson This was one of those "debate which side of the 45 is better" 45s for me. The "A" side was "Far Far Away," which was an upbeat pain song. Then the B-side was this gem. In many ways, this song has far eclipsed the "hit" side of the single. Don Gibson could sure write songs. Ask Ray Charles, who covered "I Can't Stop Loving You." Or Patsy Cline, who did "Sweet Dreams (Of You)." (BTW, Patsy's recording was the fourth time the song had made the country charts, following Faron Young and two versions by Gibson himself.) And he could sure sing 'em, too, as evidenced by this song. This is one of Gibson's most covered compositions (along with the previously-mentioned songs and "Oh, Lonesome Me"). It's one of his best, too. Thanks for reading. (I'd Be) A Legend in My Time Written by Don Gibson Recorded by Don Gibson From Sweet Dreams, 1959 If they gave gold statuettes:

A slow and easy song with a touch of melancholy.
