There's a Time and a Place!

Mobile phones, cell phones, bloody nuisances, call them what you will, are pretty much ubiquitous these days but surely there are some places that should remain mobile phone free. I thought I'd seen it all last night when a young lad turned up to play 5-a-side football with us and then repeatedly sent texts while the game went on around him. But no! Further surprises awaited me this morning as I relieved myself of the 2 gallons of coffee required to kick-start me every day. I found myself standing at the urinal while listening to someone in trap 1 conducting a full on phone conversation about laminate flooring to the audio backdrop of them going about their business, so to speak!! I made sure I spent an extra long time under the hand dryer!!! And if he's reading this, whoever he may be, can I suggest he conducts his home improvement conversations in a more convenient location (if you'll pardon the pun). Oh, and choose a lighter colour for your laminate flooring if you're going for dark leather sofas!!!

Someone did a post about this - whether people took their cell phones into their loos with them. I am still without one but thinking maybe I should get one for emergencies. Vince has one and that's bad enough.

@WorDazza @JudyEv Isn't there some statistic about the danger posed by toilets? For example I just found this: 'In 1996, toilets injured 43,000 Americans a year, while sharks injured just 13.' So you never know!

@Fleura Isn't the sea a shark's toilet? Technically those 13 were toilet related!!

And what emergencies do you think may befall you whilst in the toilet? Oh hang on, if mobile phones had been around in 1977 maybe Elvis would still be with us!! Too soon?? 42 years! Nah!

Whenever I hear someone having a conversation in a place like that (and yes I have often overheard conversations from the next cubicle) I'm always really tempted to join in and offer my opinion (on their choice of flooring for example!) Haven't quite had the nerve yet though.

@fleura If people are going to broadcast their business then they can’t complain about people joining in. I too would just love to do that. Maybe if enough of us do it people would think twice. I wish I had a signal blocking device that I could carry with me. When mobiles were a novelty I saw a group of boys in the Main Street going up behind people speaking on their phone and shouting very rude words over the shoulder of the talker into the phone. Terrible thing to do but utterly hilarious.

a female passenger got on the jeepney yesterday while talking to her friend on the phone and didn't stop even when she got off. while onboard, she was also rummaging through her bag to pay her fare while talking about the job post, training, benefits, her operations that broke the bank, its effects on her weight, skin, her medications, etc. i agree about the light and dark combination!

You obviously have great taste There's nothing annoys me more than people continuing their phone conversation while someone is trying to serve them in a shop or on public transport etc. The height of rudeness.

Some years ago I was in a commuter train from Milan, Italy, to smaller towns in the north of the city. I was in a compartment for six people. Five of them shouted into their phones. It was a pandemonium. What did they tell the other side? They informed them where the train was and when they'd probably arrive (they did this trip every day) and that they'd call again when they had arrived so that the pasta could be put into the boiling water and would be ready when they arrived at their homes, etc, etc. In German trains, one also hears the occasional conversation but it's the exception. In Italy, the person who does not use his or their phone is the exception. @LadyDuck Am I exaggerating?

No, you are not exaggerating, we felt like people from Mars in Milan. All people there look at their smartphone, some talk, some looks at images, but nobody dare to look where they go and they bump into each other without not evening taking the time to say "I am sorry". Now that the apartment of my mother is sold, I do not think we will go back soon to Milan.

Smartphones are OK but, yes, they (and other devices/technology) have their place and time. I've noticed recently that there are often a lot of people staring into their phones while walking through the busy city centre where I work. Now, I understand if they might want to make a call while walking or even send a quick text or change the music if they're listening on a phone. What I don't get is why they're staring at the phone for far longer than it takes to do any of those things. If I'm using my phone, I'll still manage to look where I'm going. My colleague has a particularly hard time as he's blind. So people who should be looking where they're going but are staring at a screen instead are constantly bumping into him. It must be very hard for him as I find it difficult to keep trying to avoid these people, especially as they seem to walk really slowly, never in a straight line, and take up the entire walkway! Saying that, it's not just people on phones who do that. I know I walk fast sometimes but I can't fathom how so many people can walk so slowly nor how a person can somehow take up a whole 12 feet of pavement. Sorry, that got a bit ranty! Have a good day.

@WorDazza I no longer go to the gym but I must say the one I went to was lovely. People on the equipment were usually using it. Well, apart from the one who seemed to spend his time looking in the mirror!

You might consider it this way, WorDazza... If the gentleman was in the closed stall, you were very lucky! Men here think nothing of using their cell phones while using the urinal while other men are using the urinals next to them. I always hope they aren't taking photos and posting them online or worse, keeping the photos of the well-endowed gentleman using the next urinal for uhh... his own purposes at home later! It's been a long time since I've come across your avatar on myLot. I hope you've been doing well and thinking of us kindly in the meantime.

@WorDazza haha! This was classic! Only time I cringe is when people are using a lot of swears in their conversation for the world to hear. Even in front of little children. I don't really mind people talking on their phones but I don't really like how loudly some can speak. But the thing that really gets me is how mobiles completely take over. I can not tell you how many times I've seen a group of friends or family sitting together and instead of enjoying each other's company, they are too busy looking down at their bloody phones. I don't see the point in getting together if their phones gets all the attention.

I've seen it so many times in pubs. Groups of people all out together but all totally engrossed in their phones. Why didn't they go out with the people they're communicating with on their phones? Unless they're taking photos of their drinks and putting them on Instagram!!

I see so many on their phones even in areas that have signs forbidding them. When I worked for the Gov, we had signs they were not allowed on and yet, they would get angry if we asked them to step out when they answered, text'd or just thumbed through their internet. Some businesses are now posting signs if people are on their phones when being served, they will be asked to step away and not be helped. I'm tired of walking in stores, on sidewalks and other locations to be ran into from those who have their noses in their phones.

I do like the idea of not serving people in shops if they are on their phones. If I worked in a shop I certainly wouldn't serve someone unless they were giving me their full attention. Can you imagine how these people would react if the sales assistant was using their phone while serving them?

Young people see their phone as a limb. Take it away and they are broken. They will die in a world with no weefee. My bugbears are phones at the cinema and people looking at their phone as they walk along. I like to walk straight at them, just to see if they notice in time. Also, in the loo when someone suddenly says, Hello! and there's that pause as they listen to the other person respond. Are they talking to me?
