In honor of National Pie Day (yes another day some celebrate!), I am sharing a photo, courtesy of Bing to show you how beautiful apples are in the snow.
When I first saw the photo I questioned if it was real or not. But after researching, it appears to be genuine. Would love one in my backyard. I also learned some things interesting about these apples.
The Snow Apple is named for both the fruit’s white flesh and the tree’s winter hardiness is one of the oldest known apple varieties. Also called the Fameuse, it originated in France, probably in the 1600s and was introduced to Canada and America one hundred years later.
The Snow Apple was the most common cultivated apple in Quebec, Canada for over 100 years, until an unknown disease or severe cold snap killed almost all the trees in the 1860s. Following the demise of the Quebec line, the Snow Apple fell into obscurity and is rarely grown today.
Have you heard of a Snow Apple before? And do you have a favorite pie?

It looks very interesting to me in the picture but I do not like winter or snow. I am very happy to have left the hard Minneapolis winters behind to come live in Jerusalem. We have winter but our winter is our rainy season. We get snow at times but not all the time.

I haven't but that is one gorgeous photo!! My Great Great Grandfather was born there so I would imagine that he would know all about them... must double check the dates. I do know that I have family there since the 1700s so someone must have munched on one!!

I have heard of Snow Apples! I didn't realize it was a nearly extinct variety... that must be why I've never found any.
