Facebook, Twitter And Me

Some time ago I read an interview with Helen Mirren in a German newspaper. In it she admits that she doesn't use social networks. She doesn't like them and sees no reason for their existence. Twitter? What for? Oh, how I like this woman! It's not that I need assistance from other people - famous or not - for my opinion, but it's nice nevertheless to see that one isn't alone. She thinks that her negative attitude comes from her upbringing. Her mother told her not to begin each sentence in a thank-you letter with the word 'I'. "It's the addressee who's important, not the sender", she was told. Facebook and Twitter, however, are all about 'ME'. "Look at me, how beautiful or funny I am. Read about me, what I do and think." She feels that it's indecent to draw attention to oneself. I don't look at social networks from a moral standpoint, however. I just think it's irrelevant to inform the world about each belch and fart and dead boring to read about other people's olfactory emissions so-to-speak. A tweet, "I'm standing on the platform waiting for my father's train." Good girl, but WHO CARES? Next tweet, "The train is late". INDEED. And so on and so forth. Then the photos! Whoever thinks that a selfie with outstretched tongue or a photo of a group of grimacing people is funny? It isn't! How do I know these things? I do because I'm on facebook and twitter anonymously to spy occasionally on people I know. We used to have foreign language assistants in our house and I like to check what they're up to now that they've gone home again. Although we usually got along with each other when they were here, it‘s 'Out of sight, out of mind' when they've returned home. Why don't I do this openly? Am I a coward? Oh no, I wouldn't say so. I registered first with my real name and was inundated by people from internet sites on which I was active. Not only they appeared on my site but also their friends and friends' friends. I found that frightening. I didn't want to see these people on my site. So I deleted my account as best as I could. Someone told me that one never completely disappears. But at least I'm not bothered any more. Now only a handful of people know about me and that's enough. I'm still looking for a detailed analysis of the phenomenon of social media. Why the urge to expose oneself? I only find profound texts on the dangers of doing so. The worst case scenario is that people kill themselves because they've exposed themselves completely to the wrong people. An article in a German newsmag had the title: 'Internet = Girls' Tomb'. But I want an answer to the WHY. Where was the urge to expose oneself before the internet came into being? Was it hidden in the subconscious and jumped out when it had the chance? Or didn't it exist? Was it created by the internet? All theories are welcome.

I am also very reluctant in joining social media sites before because I don't want to expose myself. I'm cautious about it's disadvantage but in the end, I opened an account to Friendster and later on Facebook but I am not putting everything there and never accept every invites from a person especially that I do not know. My remaining active account now is only on FB since friendster stopped its operation. I did not bother to sign up with Twitter, Instagram and the rest of it for some reason and another one is I can't manage them all. It's better to take a sleep and have a refreshed mind after.

I have both but usually ignore twitter completely. As for FB, it's mostly to keep up with friends who have moved far away or are way across town. I have also have a more private setting so I have not seen any of those annoying selfies you mentioned nor do I read the kind of exchanges you spoke of. But there are a lot of jokes on my page which I happily share and then some of my friends and I are trying to help pet rescues by sharing the photos they post of their homeless pets in hopes that someone will wish to adopt one.

Perhaps you did that because your FB page is not private like mine is @MALUSE

It's a sad reality that too many people want attention, they are nothing, but showing up on media sites they feel "important". They surely post photos of beautiful houses and cars that are not at all their property, but nobody can check, because everything is "virtual". I never liked Twitter, I have a Facebook account to share some photos with my cousins who live in Italy. Should those sites close tomorrow I will not regret them.

Maybe we are too old to be able to feel the attraction of such sites?

@MALUSE May be we are too smart and we dislike to read so many fake news and silly things.

@LadyDuck That's also a possible explanation. :-)

Drama, drama and more drama! The drama queens have always been around, they used to go to dances and bars for all that attention they so needed. I used the internet as an outlet there for a while, way back in 2000, ever hear of myspace? But I was also promoting a band and that is where I wrote their blog, I had my own account and I used it to vent, I got a lot of sh*t stirred up and deleted the blog. I am much more mature now, or full of manure Now I blog for extra money and to gather with people like me online. However, I have gotten overly excited and allowed people I do not know to know my business and they stabbed me in the back, of course after pretending to be "that friend!" Actually you told me to keep my big mouth shut and that would not happen so I listen, and learn. Now I tell them what they wanna hear, or after the fact news. I am on several social networks but here for the most part. Oh, its rare I do a selfie, once a year is plenty, I mean how much can a person change in a year?

I know the term 'drama queen'. I've never seen the term 'drama king', though. Does that mean that this characteristic is more a female phenomenon?

When I joined those social media sites way back when, I found that their content provided wonderful writing prompts (especially on Twitter). But, over the course of these past twelve years, they have gone so downhill that I deactivated most of my accounts, and plan to deactivate my Facebook (an subsidiaries) once my terminally ill mother passes, and I have deactivated her account.

@MALUSE I have deactivated my Facebook account a few times since 2008, and had been planning to deactivate it again before Mom's cancer diagnoses. But, as soon as she got that, I knew I was going to have to keep my account active long enough to keep her contacts posted.

I rarely go to Facebook and even more rarely to Twitter. I don't see the attraction. I thought they were important at one time but they have lost their appeal.

I read somewhere that people used to climb a mountain to see the world. Now they climb a mountain so the world can see them.

I think everyone wants to be relevant. In your own social media account, this need is fulfilled. I have Instagram only to follow my favorite artists. And the trains are never late here. Nice post, by the way.

@MALUSE Exactly. If I wanted to see that, I could watch some of the stupid shows on television today.

I don't do Twitter because I don't understand it. I do Facebook because it's an easy way of staying in touch with distant friends and family. I would class myLot, and other blogging sites/blogging in general, as social media.

To me i see social media to be good because trough that we get to know the where about of our old friends, family and many other relatives. We also use it to promote our products online which is helping many people today. Those who misuse it is left to them.

I know some people post the most inane stuff on facebook. I cut my toe nails......Bully for you! I had beans for lunch......who cares............. I must say I do enjoy facebook and I enjoy keeping in touch with family and friends plus I like to put my photos of my holidays on there because I do not want to lose them! I have one account on there where I put all my photos but I do not allow anyone to be a friend on there because I do not want to be bothered by people! Some people do post some really good and informative stuff at the same time. You need to control what you see and are exposed to on those sites.

I agree with you totally and you've put it very well. (I guess people say things like that when you write stuff they agree with ). I think social media is about me, me, me too. I can't get far enough away from it.

I am not a big user of social media. While I was teaching I saw way too many fights started because of something said on the social media sites.

Sharing stuff on social media makes a person feel important and like they are part of a group rather than alone. Also, it can make one feel popular when one is not in real life.

One really does not have to expose himself/herself on social media. Just like you, I do not want to see people with those wacky photos with tongue sticking out; not so funny for me. I just open FB to check if my family has some private messages for me and that's one thing that I like in FB. We can still have close communication.

The younger generation are obsessed with social mediums but then it's a far different world for young people today than it was in our day (or Helens'). I am on both FB and Twitter but solely for the purpose of promoting my own blog. I don't reveal what I had for breakfast or any other personal information
