When Men Listen

Being a caregiver is not easy and when its a man you are tending its even harder because, well, let`s face it they are hard headed and do not want to listen. I often think that everything I say is going in one ear and out the other although I am not saying any of it in a demanding tone, just a matter of fact tone of knowing something does and will help. I know about breathing problems since I have asthma ( I do not take any medication) and I have been with more than one person hyperventilating from panic attacks, I am learning more about COPD and breathing problems caused by lung cancer so I do know, sometimes, how to handle certain problems although all the medications are not helping. When I hear " I can`t breathe" but I see the person breathing, and I have checked the stats, I am teaching the person what I taught myself when I was without an emergency inhaler. To relax and the air will come. So..... Last night I was told " I could not breathe last night so I laid back, closed my eyes and I let my body relax and I felt my lungs open and air came so easy." It feels good to know that he was listening to the best advice I can give anyone who has breathing problems. Do you have a story of "when someone listened for their own good?"

I have some advice that needs to be taken right now, but isn't. I think they have to think it is their own idea. Men or women.

Write a note to "Self from Bob" and write down what needs to be done, set it where he can see it

Good for you. I have many. My Dad was so stubborn and he would listen to my advice, but I would hear it from others, never from him it seems. It had to be his idea.

Probably nearly into the hundreds of stories I was a healthcare assistant in a hospital for 3 years then a home care assistant for terminal patients for 2 years then a senior care officer in a residential place for people with brain injuries...then a few other jobs after In my experience most people don't listen but you get the occasional few that do and that's good. PS...I found the ladies harder to get through to as they didn't want to listen to a man...

That’s awesome he was able to use your advice later when you weren’t around! Now he can learn to calm himself that way.

When my kids used to say they did not want to do a project for school. I told them finish it right away and we would have a nice treat and they listened and we had a treat.

Glad he is learning. The nurse taught mom to breathe in through her nose and out through her mouth. It is supposed to help you push more air out.

@andriaperry Even when she had that. There is teas that Walmart carries here that the radiation department recommended to her also. One brand name is yogi and there is another brand name too. They make different herbal mixtures to help with different things. One mixture is supposed to help you breathe easier. You could check them out if he will try them.

My MIL was on morphine for pain. She didn't want me to waken her for her pain Meds......but the doctor had specifically said that the timing was important.....and missin that med, or taking it late would have been counter productive. Then, when the pain had subsided (healing will do that) she decided she could just stop taking the Meds..... Long story short, she recovered and the doctor gave he an enormous compliment on how well we had looked after her.

No doubt, being a man, he thinks this lying back relaxing was all his own idea.
