I just want to share how happy I am today! I received an invitation for orientation as a Games Volunteer for Tokyo 2020 Olympics! I applied for this last year and so stoked to read this update to my application this morning! This news definitely made my day! What are you grateful for today?

That's fantastic! Congrats! I have a friend who's been working as a journalist the last 3 Olympics, she's had a fantastic time every game. I'd really like to go there to see the equestrian stuff, but it's quite far. Must start saving money now. Do they pay for your travels etc?

Thank you! That must have been a great experience for your journalist friend! Nope, I have to shoulder the costs of my own flight, accommodation, etc. But I know they will cover food and drinks during the shift. Hope you get to watch it next year

@filipinagirl Still a great experience! I have to make a plan soon I think, 'cause flight and hotel rooms are going to get expensieve. I saw parts of the Games in London, but then I stayed with friends.

@Torunn correct, that would be pricey by then so preparation is crucial. I also plan to stay with my friend in Japan so that would save me some costs too.

congrats! will this be your first time in japan? how long will the orientation be? are you the only volunteer from the philippines?

@filipinagirl i didn't even know they do calls for international volunteers. do all olympic host countries do that? maybe your 3 trips gave you an advantage. do they prefer that you know several languages? if the orientation is less than an hour, i'm guess you're not just flying in for that. you'll make the most of your trip.

Thank you! I have been to Japan thrice. It's my favorite country so I do not mind going back many times more

I see the orientation will last less than an hour. I have it scheduled later this month. So far, I do not know if there are other volunteers from the Philippines but would be glad if there are. There's a big chance because we are just so everywhere

@hereandthere yup, they do that. I first learned about this just last Rio 2016. Apparently, having the right mix of international volunteers is of great assistance to the Committee since there would be athletes and spectators from around the world on the Olympics proper. And yes, language is a factor too as this is a global event.
