Since I know for myself, I always miss a sock after washing.
So, let's say I put 5 pairs of socks in the machine and after washing I extract 4.5 pairs. 
I can not see the opening of the black hole or interdimensional portal.
No anomaly of the spatial continuum.
No ghosts, gremlins, dwarves or elves did not crawl around the machine and my socks, but there is always one sock less 
Mystery .... the true mystery ....

@DianneN Well, that's the best, I will not even notice when they disappear. At least I will not think about nonsense, how somebody sneaked into my house to steal my SOCKS!!!

@LowRiderX In the last 3 weeks, I have been crawling around, searching for a pink sock, a blue one as well as a purple/white one. (Not mine, but my young relatives.) I paired them up very well before putting them in the washing machine but now only one of each are here!

Ah, the old sock mystery. Like a couple that can't get along I guess they split up and went separate ways

That did happen to me once and for the life of me I couldn't find it never!!! Since then I have bought those nylon net looking bags put my socks in it and zipper it up. So far so good. Once in a while these nets open up in the wash, now this is another mystery isn't it?

I thought when I bought the bag it would all be okay...
it wasn't. So now I try to get socks that I can tie in a knot and so far so good, but some you can't tie in a knot. The ones I can't tie I hope they never run away from me.

I think everyone knows there is a hole in the washer that socks mysteriously disappear into..One of the reasons i like summer is no sock wearing is required...lol.

@LowRiderX Reminds me of pen lids. I'm someone who likes to put pen lids right back on a pen but so many people lose them. In fact so many people lose the pens in general! Where do they go??

I understand that. I have done wash and lost something and know it must be here in my home but so far has not turned up. Sometimes I have found my missing sock.

@Janet357 I don't have a pet right now. And I did not miss one, it always happens when I put them in the machine. Actually, I notice when machine finished washing.
