If We're Not "Americans" What Are We?

I have been to around a dozen countries in 3 continents. In all the countries, they called us "Americans" because we are from the United States of America. However, here in the USA I keep hearing people say that anyone from any country in the continents of North and South America are "Americans".
People from Panama are Panamanians, people from Brazil are Brazilians, people from Mexico are Mexicans, people from Canada are Canadians. So what are people from the United States of America called in your country?

Maybe they should change it to Northern Americans of the United States instead of just Americans

Kind of wordy. Would we call you Filipinos of Asia? ;~)

We don't claim a monopoly on the American Continent either. We are called Americans because it's short of the United States of America. It's not about the continent, it's about he name of our country.

@ParaTed2k Americans is fine with me too, I just thought of it incase some smart guy asks if your the only Americans. Would United Statesians work? 
Philippine scenario is different since we don't have monopoly of the word Asians. We don't call ourselves Asians and the rest are Chinese, Japanese etc... Maybe Filipinos could be called " Asian Latinos"

Exactly! Though I've heard Canadians often get mistaken for Americans in Europe. I think the Metric references should be a real give away. ;~D

In my country what we call in you if you are from foreign lands and from USA is Americans likes us we are from Asia and from Philippines so we are Filipino.
