I believe in God but also Believe it's Bad luck to Walk under a Ladder

On my way home after doing some shopping, I took a side street with a narrow sidewalk. Because my mind was preoccupied with something else,I was not aware of a ladder set up by a utilities company doing repair work on a house adjacent to the road until it was in front of me. Because there were railings acting as barriers between the foot path and the road, my only recourse was to walk under the leaning ladder. But there was a brief moment of hesitancy as I ponder whether this will bring me bad luck. The church frowns on superstitions but it's interesting to find out that this particular one has Christian influence. When Christ died, a ladder had rested against the crucifix. this leaning ladder became a symbol of wickedness, betrayal and death. Hence walking under a ladder would be courting misfortune. I'm curious if others with religious beliefs are also affected by superstitions like when a black cat cross in front of you, the number 13, Broken mirrors and other harbingers of ill tidings. Is there a need to hang a horseshoe above the door, knock on wood. toss salt over one's left shoulder... How about making the sign of the cross for protection and to ward off evil? Now that I have left the church, will my action (walking under a ladder) bring me bad luck? I pray it would not.

I am not superstitious, but I do not walk under a ladder, just because I do not trust people, who tells me that is well fixed? I love black cats and I will never hand a horseshoe above the door or toss salt over my left shoulder. I believe that some people are so negative that is better to stay away to avoid bad luck.

@josie_ You are right, but I cannot feel stressed if I see a black cat, because I love them and what I will try to do is to pet the cat.

Although we might not attribute it to luck, a good relationship definitely contributes to the success of our endeavors. Despite it's irrationality, superstition is practice because people will say, "If it works, great. If not, where's the harm in it?

If the ladder in the case was shaky & with some containers of paint & clumsy painters up there, then I would consider walking under it as extremely unwise. You have passed that ladder with no accidents resulting, you were extremely lucky then.

I hurriedly passed through because there was a repairman with a wide girth on the ladder, although I'm sure the ladder could handle the weight load. The incident cause me to question how religion can co-exist with folk superstitions. Why people of faith are also susceptible to what the church consider paganism.

@josie_ (the ladder is a very high one while my height is not that significant. It is faster if I just went under it. No bad luck those times ever ). I am a bit superstitious however re: if I walk out of the house & see a cat. That means having a bad trip be it a black, white, ginger or rainbow colour cat!!!

I am not superstitious but with walking under ladders and breaking mirrors, it makes a lot of sense to be careful and alert.

Unless you happen to be in the situation I describe, I don't see any one intentionally walking under a ladder. Also broken mirrors and glass should be avoided for obvious safety reasons.

Bad things happen, but I doubt bad luck has anything to do with it. We are mortals, live here and suffer pain and joy. We just need to believe in GOD no matter what.

There are situations where we have no control. Some turn to God for help.

Believing in GOD is the utmost important. I am someone who is spiritual my heart. I don't believe in luck as such. Moreover I think, do good and it will come back to you in unexpected ways. Be humble!! Religious believes have followed certain set of superstitions, but i really don't know who has actually given them birth.

If I understand your comment, you believe spirituality is more important and a person can find this higher consciousness even if they are not religious or follow any particular religion.

That is neat to learn how that superstition came about. I am not religious nor am I superstitious. My mother was superstitious though so I know of plenty of them but not how they came about.

Ladder is not fixed in a place permanently so there may be chances to fall it and can get damages through it. So for giving a warning or being asked to be cautious while walking under the ladder. This is my explanation on the superstition.

That is as good an explanation as any other. And it would definitely be bad luck if it fell on one's person.

When under the ladder we must pay close attention and hope that the ladder does not overtake us. I don't believe it would bring bad luck.

We all have such beliefs in all faith. A cat crossing your way is the most common of all. I am sure you will have a good day and bad luck will stay away.

Thanks. Our luck is mostly base on preparedness and being in the right place at the right time. This is what I believe. This post is really about how we reconcile our faith in religion with folk superstition.

Bad luck is made by negligence of others or our shortcomings. We couldn't avoid it but we could be careful and prepared for the eventualities.
