Short Story: The river of love in Evelyn flowed strongly one Sunday in her

Evelyn loved rivers. She often sat and read a book by one near her home.

Evelyn Palmer was in her local church one Sunday, and they were singing a song entitled, "river of love" As the song was being sung and played, Evelyn was imagining a river of love flowing through herself, and cleansing her of all her sins, ailments, pain etc. Evelyn dumped them all in the fast flowing river which was flowing in, and through her, then out of her. Evelyn also placed her open hand into the water, and scooping it up towards her mouth, she had a drink of it, thinking while she did this that this life-giving water would heal her to of all of her other current health conditions too, such, as her indigestion problems, and painful acid reflex occurences, which happened to her after just about anything that she ate. Then the next verse of the song was being sung, after Evelyn had just done this, and it included the opening words, "Heal, and be healed by love. Immerse yourself in the river of love". Now, that's funny, she mused to herself. That's just exactly what I was just doing, and I have never heard this song ever sang before. It was a new youth choir in the church performing various songs which were new to that staid old church, that particular morning. While basking warmly in this synchronistic experience, Evelyn, suddenly clicked herself back to what the Priest was saying now. The priest said that, "every time we love, we take a step closer to God." Evelyn rolled that thought over in her mind, but that would also mean she thought then that God is steps away from us now. We are distanced from him, and need to move closer to him. Father David's message seemed a nice one at first hearing then, but Evelyn queried its truthfulness. "Surely, we are all right next to God all the time. God never steps even one step away from any of us", she thought then to herself. God's river of love continually flows through us then, as close to us as our body is, but we need to get into the water, to feel its benefits and to feel close to God, and to feel his love, and to love. This is true because really we can only love in God's way through us for it to be true love, any love loving from our self alone must be always incomplete, and just a shadowing of what God's love really can be, when we fully immerse ourselves within his living waters flowing through us and in us at all times. Yes, Evelyn thought proudly to herself now, "I reckon the Priest just got that from some book, and never really thought about it much, because it does sound kind of nice, but really, it is just not true." Evelyn loved rivers. She often sat and read a book by one near her home. Is God close to us then, or far away? God tells us in the Christian Bible that he holds each of us in his hand. So, we are close to him always, and yet God's hand is often moving around, as his spirit hand moves around continually, and so we do not feel that closeness, unless we feel God's love, or his spirit of love in us, as that river of love mentioned here in my story. I like the way you use story telling to make a point. Jesus used parables which I believe was more effective compare to pulpit sermons that tend to monotonously drone on and on lulling churchgoers to sleep. Evelyn's question about how far apart are we from God merit further thoughts.

Thanks Josefina. Also with a story, nobody much can argue the rightness or wrongness of my ideas, for, after all, it is just my character in the story speculating over these things. Yes, if God really exists, why would he ever distance himself from his creation? God, to my mind, would keep an eye on his creation, and be as close to each part of it, as they want him to be. After all, closeness or farness is mainly just a concept in our mind, which we can also collapse with our minds, by using our imagination.

@josie_ I think I was also taught that God is up in Heaven. Then I went through a few Eastern type religions and got hold of the idea of oneness. Today, I am back to thinking that I certainly am not God, but I try to get as close to him as I can, by connecting to him any way I can, through prayer, dreams, or imaginative techniques.

@innertalks _Even if I have abandon the tenets of institutionalize religion, there are moments of reflective musing when I wonder about the idea of God and his existence. Are we fixating our deep seated fear of the unknown unto an abstract God who takes on the job of a parent assuring a frighten child during a thunderstorm?

Very inspiring - when we love, we get a step closer to God. Thus, the more we love, the more we get closer to God.

Yes, thank-you. Also, the reverse is true too, I think. If we don't love, we are moving a step away from God, or turning our backs on his love also. Is this really true though? I think that this is true in that we can choose to love with our mind, but when we also refuse to love by allowing God's love to live in our heart, helping us to be the real us for God, then we turn our back on our real self in God, as well as on God in us, as well then too.

@innertalks Well said. I like your statement. You're a man of God. God is love. I found it in yourself. Keep it up and you'll be blessed. Nice meeting you.

@Nakitakona Thankyou. I do my best to be a man of God, but without his help, it is hard at times, especially when I try to go it alone, and forget his always present presence. By the way, I see that you are fairly new here. Welcome to mylot!!

Your stories are always interesting and give one much to think about. God is very near but might we step away or drift away or draw away from God? Let's say we cheat on our mate, did we do while holding God's hand or did we let go of his hand to commit the immoral act?

Thanks Felix. And you are very good at asking penetrating questions that get to the heart of the truth, that is often still waiting to be prised free from my stories, or explained in a better-understood way. The freedom of choice allows us to move away from our position in God's hand, if we want to. Sometimes, this might lead us to fall off a cliff, and yet at the bottom of the cliff, there is God too again, waiting to catch us after our fall. Nobody can step away from God's love completely, as it is always moving ever towards them like a gentle breeze to caress them in its wake.

Yes, we should never switch off from divine love that is all-pervasive all the time even in the direst of circumstances. The door to God's love is never closed tight shut. When we are true to ourselves, the basics that we know and are born with, we will have a fulfilling and meaningful ride right through - siva

Thanks siva. Being true to ourselves reflects a greater truth that we are being true to God then too. For the real us, and God, are made of the same substance, love.

@innertalks Yes, Steve I also believe there is an unbroken connection to the divine and we come with a homing instinct. There are wheels within wheels in the creative process with nonhuman intelligence influencing and even guiding us. I quote astronaut Edgar Mitchell's thoughts from up above: “Then, looking beyond the Earth itself to the magnificence of the larger scene, there was a startling recognition that the nature of the universe was not as I had been taught. My understanding of the separate distinctness and the relative independence of movement of those cosmic bodies was shattered. There was an upwelling of fresh insight coupled with a feeling of a ubiquitous harmony-a sense of interconnectedness with the celestial bodies surrounding our spacecraft. Particular scientific facts about stellar evolution took on new significance.” - siva

@Shiva49 "Invisible threads are the strongest ties." This is a quote from Friedrich Nietzsche, who at first reading seems to be the unlikeliest person to have said this. When we connect to the invisible threads that connect us all together then, we do become stronger. We are all tied together in this journey. Not one person goes it alone. The quicker that we can all see this, the quicker will love and compassion spread past war, hostility, and greed. And you do not have to be spaced out to see that, but it seems from your quote above, that being in space does help...LOL...
