Internet gone, TV gone!

For some reason I don't really get we're getting a new internet and TV provider in my appartment building. I didn't like any of the TV providers they offered so I haven't ordered any, I might try to figure out this streaming and internet stuff first. Possibly go back to the olden days and buy an antenna to watch the state channels. Internet however, can't imagine being without that, and no nothing works. I might have to do something wild and adventerous, like reading a book. Or vacuuming the flat. Did figure how to connect my computer to my phone. Realized it was dead easy and am a bit annoyed at myself for not having checked that the other times internet was down. What do you do when your internet connection or TV signals don't work?

I have it on when I'm grading and things like that, my mind seems to like to have more than one thing to do. There's also quite a few good documentaries I see for keeping up to date and because I'm basically interested in everything. With an antenna I should get the state channels, I might try just to see if it works. My father plans to do that. I could also get an antenna and see if I get the university network, then I don't have to pay anything for internet either. I just hooked the phone to the computer with an USB, I reckon that's faster than setting up a network with the phone. Works fine, I've got lot of data left, but the connection is supposed to work so I should phone and shout at them.

@crazyhorseladycx Some documentaries are too sad to watch. I skip some, then I find some really weird ones that turn out to be interesting. A German one about the dating habits of Orthodox Jews for example, it was really good. Never thought it'd be interesting, but I had the choice between that, Ancient Aliens and some reality show. I had use about 35 % of the data I had, and what I used yesterday wasn't much either. If I start uploading pictures it'll soon be more though. However, if I can get an antenna so I can log on to the universities network, I can use that for both TV and internet. And as I'm employed at the university, no-one will notice and I don't have to pay. I have used it before, in the summers when all the students between the university and my flat are away there's not so many networks between us and I get a better signal. So I might try it, it's a fast network so it should cover everything

@Torunn yes ma'am, some're quite distressin'. 't first i 'twas not keen 'n watchin' this poor young lady's story. turned out well though 's she 'twas returned to her people, 's such should be. 'lso brought more light to the facts that most americans choose to deny - the ill treatment 'n sufferin' our ancestors brought to the natives 'f these lands. fer what? greed.... that'd be brilliant if'n such works, hookin' to the universities network. i'd fear such, lol.

Usually I will just grab a book, or pick up my guitar or something. But yes, when the Internet is down, to the phone I go. Loss of Internet annoys me more than anything except maybe loss of power.

Loss of power annoys me more in the winter than in the summer, 'cause then it gets cold. Plus with the power goes also the internet! But not the phone. I live just by the hospital though, more or less same powersupply so if there's problem, they fix it fast

@porwest I'm going to make sure I have some candles, matches and a flash torch handy in the winter. I've got a fireplace, so I'm OK for an evening. Having some kind of emergency solutions is good though, not matter whether it's for winter or summer.

@Torunn Well. That would be a convenience living close to an 'important' place to have power. I usually hate it more in the summer since it gets so hot. Either time, though, is unwelcome in my book. I keep saying I will buy a generator, but never do.

Cry cause if it don't work my internet , I have nothing to do. I have streaming with my Roku. It is cheapest and best thing I have ever found. If you can afford Netflix and /or Hulu even better. I never want to deal with expensive cable again.

@bunnybon7 I know, I have to be careful not to give in :-) I think I can pause both the streaming services I've been checking out so I only pay for one at the time. I've got some friends paying for 4-5 different services 'cause they don't all have the same, but I think they overlap quite a bit.

I've realized we had a really good cable deal here, with the new deal it'll be more than 50 % more expensieve for fibre and more or less the same TV-deal. Right now I'm binge-watching free documentaries on German TV and planning to check out Netflix and some other stuff. I'll make sure I'm going to watch lot of film/series for a month, 'cause it's a month for free first.

Are you going to get the internet or is it just gone? I use it as my connection to the world. I lived without it but it would be hard after all these years. You can get youtube on your phone. I read most days and I might vacuum some year.

I'm going to get it, it's just the new connection that doesn't work. I have planned to figure out how to get the internet on my TV. I do want a proper manual but they seem to be unwilling to make them these days. I like manuals with lists of how to do things like that.

@Torunn I only find out how to do things by searching online. That way, I don't bother my techie friends all the time, just for major stuff that I can't find.

@akalinus I'm hoping I haven't thrown away the manuals, but most of them will be available online too. Some times it's difficult to find the easiset solution though. I've got a friend who's a smart phone app developer, she always knows easier solutions than the internet.

Is it expensive to use the phone to provide internet coverage? We do that sometimes when we can't get other coverage but it's mostly when we're travelling.

No, not really, but right now it's because I don't really use my phone a lot for the internet so I've got lot of data left. But I think using your phone is cheaper here, my friend in Sydney seems to be finding new apps ever so often to find the ones that use least data. Here you just get more, it doesn't cost much.

It's the ones who decided to change the provider I want to shout at. Possibly also the person who managed to set the activation date to 1.7 when they installed the thing 26.6. Seems fixed now. Wondering if I should make a lot of noise and demand money for one day back ...

@VoiceofTruth7 Half of us have no idea why the other half wanted to change. I think they wanted faster internet, I never had a problem but I do all the big down- and up-loading at work. The older half of people living here are really annoyed, 'cause they're left without TV-signals for nearly a week, they don't manage the set-up themselves and information isn't really great. Hope your mothers provider figures it out fast!

@Torunn my mom is switching providers right now and lets just say its a hot mess are phone and everything is out right now I do not know why she did not leave well enough alone and stay with our old provider. According to her the service is supposed to faster and cheaper but we shall see you know that phrase you get what you pay for I hope she does not regret it in the long run.

I would if it had been a bit earlier in the evening. So if it's still like that tomorrow, I'll go out and take pictures all evening. Possibly also shout at the internet provider ;-)

We almost did not make a signal for TV, and the Internet was lucky to work perfectly well, we waited for 7 days for someone to come and fix. How did we get a package that has a decent price, I expected to be a little more up-to-date, so I had to report the case.

7 days is a long wait. Once I phoned they fixed the net at once. Their TV packages still don't work for me though, so haven't ordered one yet. I don't like that I have to have if for a year, daft being stuck with something you don't use for that long

@LowRiderX That's even more annoying. I'm going to figure out how this smartphone-stuff works, so that if do get a TV-package of some sort, I can use the smartphone in an "emergency"

@Torunn Basically I met online, but when Tv did not work, they had to come because some part had broken and they had to replace them.
