No more postcards.

When I was young I used to love going on holiday to the seaside ,and one of the things I would enjoy doing while I was away , was to go to the local shops and choose postcards to send home to my family and friends. Of course nowadays people do not send postcards because they use their phones to keep in touch with everybody. I think this is a shame because I used to love buying and sending postcards, as well as receiving postcards from other people. I also used to collect postcards in a scrapbook to remind me of where people had been on their holidays.

The sending of postcards has indeed declined. But I've just received a picture postcard from friends who were on holiday and I'm going away in a fortnight and intend to send a lot of picture postcards.

@lazydaizee I'll tell you where I'm going when you've added the name of your country. I'm even going to add a photo of a famous sight. :-)

@MALUSE Look forward to seeing that. I live in England by the way. I could not add this to my profile page because the drop down thing kept going back to worldwide.

I hope you enjoy your holiday, are you going somewhere nice? It is good to hear that some people do still send postcards.

I think they are out of touch with the way we always do things. I suppose it is easier for them to use their mobiles. But buying and sending cards , is one of the fun things about going on holiday, along with sun, sea, food, walking etc.

I still send postcards. but not nearly as many as I used to. My son usually takes photos which he sends to a company in the Channel Islands (via the Internet, of course) who print the photos and a message and the address on the other side and then send them by ordinary mail to the recipient. We also had a hilariously over-coloured postcard from friends holidaying in Greece. It was the blatant and amateurish colouring of an already coloured photo which prompted them to choose it, of course, but it was a post-card, nevertheless. It's a LONG time since anyone sent us a picture of anywhere with an inked cross over a hotel window with the words "We are here"!

That sounds like a good idea that your son has, you get family photos and a message sent just for you. I used to like going to those shops along the beach and looking at the joke postcards, often they would make me laugh out loud.

I did look at the postcards for sale on my recent trip to New Hampshire, I thought about buying some to share with friends here on MyLot.

That would have been an interesting discussion, when did you go to New Hampshire and did you have a good trip?

When I was a child I used to get postcards as my memento of where we had been. It's a shame we don't ourselves sending and receiving them as much any more.

@HazySue Me too, I had loads of them. They were mostly from the UK because people did not go abroad on holiday like they do nowadays. But it is nice to see old postcards of towns because many of the original buildings have gone now.

Many people have kept their postcard collections from when they were young. Now some of these postcards have become collectable .

@aureategloom I suppose it is nicer to buy postcards with scenery because then your family can see where you have been and maybe talk about it when you get back.

That is nice , I expect they enjoy receiving them from you. Do you have many to send when you go on holiday.? Do you buy postcards with scenery or joke postcards?

My daughter went on a school sky trip last winter and she sent me a postcard. I found that really special and charming. Nobody else sends me a postcard these days. I got some postcards from my trip that I went on. I put them in an album to remember my happy travels. These days people send emails or photos by Internet.

@lazydaizee In 2009 I went family and friends postcards from Cape Town in South Africa. I think the staff must have stolen them. Yes, some people save money by taking the postcards back home to give out.

It is nice to get a postcard from somebody you love because you can keep it and cherish the memory. Sometimes friends would send me postcards from their holiday and the post would be very slow. I would get the card on a Friday and they would be home on the Saturday. We would joke that they could save money on postage by bringing the card back with them instead of sending it.

@maximax8 That is very strange for the staff to steal your postcards. Perhaps they were really poor and were able to sell the postage stamps . Where did you stay, was it a hotel or a hostel or maybe a privately run guest house?

I always loved to get postcards when I was a child. It was also a way to let friends and family know that the holidaymakers had arrived safe . This was in the days before everybody had phones, even home phones.

Yes, I agree! Sending a postcard definitely provides a more personal touch.

Do you think it is a shame that nobody sends postcards anymore. I often wonder what happened to the factories that printed them. Perhaps they have all closed down unless they went into printing other products. Maybe the same thing will happen with greetings cards in the future.

@Maria24 It would be a shame if people stopped using greetings cards because that would put many people out of work. Lots of card shops and stationery shops would lose customers and have to close down.
