A New Scam?

I had a phone call today informing me that my Amazon Prime account would be automatically renewed for 39.99. If I wished to speak to a manager about this, please press 1. I don't even have an Amazon account of any sort, so I knew they were trying to scam me. If I did press 1, no doubt they would try to extract my bank details etc. A couple of weeks ago I got calls two days running from 'Visa' telling me there was a charge of £600 on my card - if it wasn't me, press 1. I immediately put the phone down and checked my account anyway. No such charge was there. I'm used to 'Microsoft' informing me that my computer has a virus, 'tax inspectors' telling me I owe tax, and people informing me that they will deal with my recent accident, but the two I mention were new to me. Have you had either of these? Are there any other scams I should be aware of? Photo of flowers in my garden

I’m sorry they’ve been ganging up on you. I’ve had the Microsoft one our first year in Florida where I had a new MacBook Air. My Microsoft was back in CT. I also received the tax one, but nothing recently. We must be so careful to these new scams. Gorgeous urn of flowers!

@jaboUK You’d think they’d use their ‘talents’ in something more legal. You’re welcome! I always adore your flowers.

@jaboUK the danger is that some people they call will have entered some other lottery and assume the call might be saying they won that one and give their details expecting the money to come in

You're lucky not to get any calls, they are such a nuisance. I've had letters telling me I've won a lottery which I've never entered.

You're lucky - I also get a lot of calls where there's no-one there - the cold callers ring multiple numbers at once I believe, but can only deal with the first person who answers.

Those are beautiful flowers. I am just about starting my garden and hope to have a mixed border. Today a few marigold seedlings disappeared...Saw a big black caterpillar around....It is hard work making a garden beautiful.... Those scams are new but they seem to come up with newer and newer ones...

Caterpillars, slugs and snails absolutely love marigolds, they're great pests. I use pellets for them. You're right, they constantly think up new ways to scam us.

scams seem like they are everywhere right now--I got a call from"social security" the other day asking for particulars and warning me of unusual activity that would require them to cancel my account--

We are lucky, we had not such kind of calls, but the best is to do nothing, hang immediately and go to check your account. The smartphones are easy to be hacked, I am even scared when I have to press a number to select the language when I call our local provider.

You're right about hanging up immediately, that's what I do. I don't possess a smartphone, most of these calls come via my landline, a few on the mobile.

About a month ago I attended a seminar on the current scams going around targeting seniors. This one is new to me, but your are right to be suspicious. The scammers are ever evolving, changing their routines... One of the things they will do is contact you about some trivial thing, then a few days later contact you again with something else, and again a few days later. what they are doing is build a data base of your information. The questions singularly seem okay if maybe a bit weird. But after a few calls they will have amassed enough info to steal your identity. If you do not know the caller, don't accept the call, let it go to voice mail. If they leave a message that info can be given to the police.

I checked it straight away by going to my bank account and there was nothing there that I hadn't authorised, certainly no £600. . If there had been I would definitely been on to the credit card company..

I have had a few calls from entities like Social Security informing me that they had vital information about my account and to call some number or another. I didn't call because they never contact people over the phone, they write letters. I've also had some fool call telling me that I qualified for 0% APR and all I need to do is give them my account numbers. I hate to think how many people fall tor that BS.
