Mac and cheese ... what do you add to it?

So do you eat your macaroni and cheese with anything added to it? As a kid my mom would add ground beef or tuna and peas. No matter how you make it you need to add salt and pepper for it to be any good. My husband was raised on mac and cheese with hot dogs... how do you eat it? And do you prefer homemade mac or box mac? I love me some Kraft Spirals or Easy Mac. Forget the generic stuff, it sucks.

You mom and mine must have used the same cookbook. She'd make mac/cheese tuna casserole with crumbled up potato chips, and bake it in the oven. Pretty tasty, though it probably had enough sodium to give Godzilla high blood pressure.

Well, *I* have high BP those days, so I'm trying to watch my sodium intake. But I have made the casserole for myself a few times, just for the feeling of nostalgia. Though I have to say I've used low=fat milk for my mac & cheese and reduced-sodium potato chips.

I'll have to suggest that to my mom as the reason for her hypertension! Do you still eat it today or are you too concerned with living to see your next birthday?

Why would you add anything to mac and cheese... it is mac and cheese... not mac and cheese and hotdogs, or mac and cheese and tuna and peas... You don't add anything to mac and cheese... leave a classic alone!

Yeah, it can get pretty boring after a while without adding something. We slice up hotdogs and put them in it. Not bad. Not bad at all.

when you add mushroom soup, do you add anything to it before mixing it in with the mac?

I like homemade, I add rotel tomatoes, or sour cream to give it a different flavor, sometimes adding a little taco seasoning is good too.

I went to public school and they used to serve mac and cheese with a side of nasty runny tomatoes whether you wanted them or not and the idea of adding tomatoes just turns my stomach. Maybe one day I'll run out of that. But I like the idea of sour cream and taco seasoning ... and actually putting them together at the same time will give a new twist to an old favorite!

My Bf makes Mac and Cheese w/ Cambells Chunky soup. Don't ask me what kind cause I have no Idea. All I know is that It has potatos and meat in it. It is so good! I'm making myself hungry thinking about it! I don't know where he got that recipie from....maybe his mother. My Mom also makes Mac and Cheese she makes it as a side dish whenever she cookes chicken and veggies.

Kraft Mac n Cheese - Kraft Mac n Cheese
I am so glad you posted this!!!!Give me Kraft Mac n Cheese!!!! And generic is a big NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!! We have had it a few different ways. If I am sick, I want it just as it is to be made per the box. Nothing added, it is my comfort food! But my kids like to add tuna and diced tomotoes or sliced hotdogs. I'll be coming back to see what everyone else adds.

Just a tip, when I add tuna and peas (my kids never eat the peas, but it makes me feel like I'm a better mom for offering them) I also add extra shredded cheese because when you add too many things it seems to lose it's flavor and we'd really hate to lose that cardboard box flavor right? Who knew powedered cheese could be so dang yummy!

I have put hot dogs in them before. But other then that don't put anything extra in them. I use the Easy Macs now more then anything else because my husband isn't a huge Mac and cheese fan, so its easier that way. We did use to get and eat the Annie's Mexican Macaroni and Cheese, but can't find it anymore around here. That stuff was nummy.

Well today might be your lucky day! Check out http://www.annies.com/products/orgmexican.html If it's the same stuff you can buy 1 box at $1.89 or a case of 12 boxes for $19.28 ... and if you really love this macaroni you can get free shipping for orders over $100! If my math is right (which it rarely is and I can't find a calculater) you would only have to buy 62 boxes to get the free shipping!

LOL. The reason why this makes me laugh is because I cannot count the number of times I've had mac and cheese with hotdogs and never once considered the possibility of adding ham! You're genius!

i used to love mac and cheese as a kid but now i think it's disgusting. i won't eat it out of a box or home made. my step father used to put cut up hot dog weeners in it which made it really gross for me since i don't even eat hot dogs either.

Kraft Mac and Cheese Delux - Kraft Mac and Cheese Delux
I like Kraft and Velveeta! Velveeta is that bomb with nothing added to it. I also like the homemade Mac and Cheese...its really cheesey. But, since Kraft is sooooo good I like leaving plain, add tuna, or sliced hotdogs. Oh, and with the tuna diced tomatoes please!! I love Mac and Cheese!! And I also like the Kraft Mac and Cheese Delux. Reminds me of Velveeta! It's GREAT!

Mac & Cheese - Mac & Cheese
Back when I was in college I learned about chili mac. You can get pretty desperate living in an apartment with five other guys and after a fews weeks of mac & cheese for every meal you can get pretty creative. The most successful concoction was chili mac, it is the combination of a box of mac & cheese and a can of chili, which makes for a mighty tasty meal (and the ingredients are pretty cheap). But I still enjoy a meal of good old plain mac & cheese from time to time.
