My 17 year old son just got a job and wants a car but he cannot afford it right now. Should I buy him a car or make him wait until he saves the money to buy one?

It sounds like he's doing a good job. Working and saving, that's great. Maybe you can pay half and he can go half.

its up to you but if you do make conditions, like getting him to earn it helping out around the house if he already does help them maybe you should lol.....jimmy

what about matching him dollar for dollar (setting a limit of ho much) or paid it have him pay you in monthly installments.

I went to work at a young age to get a car and my parents didn't help, as its a luxury. The rule in my family was all luxuries we would pay for them or do without until we earned the money. There are many ways to get to work and I rode the bus most of the time; however, my parents offered to drive when the weather was bad. I think its important for teenagers to know that their parents can't always fix the situation, as many teenagers go off to college at 18 and its quite hard to fix long distance problems. I have two grown children and we didn't give either child a car or any other luxury items and both are hard working citizens that have good positions. Our oldest daughter is retiring from the military next year and our younger daughter is between jobs, but I'm sure she will be working soon, as she was recently laid off.

Well, I don't think you should buy it for him. I think you should get the car(through a loan, by making montly payments) and have him chip in on the insurance and montly payments. If he has a job then I think it would be a great opportunity for him to learn some more responsibility and help pay for the car. :)

You know, my parents bought me my first car. The rule was, I had to pay the insurance, gas, and maintenace. Let me tell you, it was tough since I went to school full-time and worked part-time. So, really, if you can afford it and if you think your son deserves this gift and can manage school, payments and a job - than be an amazing parent!

Although you should probably have him save the money on his own, he probably needs the car to get to work, right? If thats the case and you can afford it, you buy it then get a reciept book and have him make payments back to you until it is paid off. If he doesn't need the car right away and he can't save very good, my friend puts an equal amount of money in the bank as her son does, do a savings account so it will gain interest. Hope that helps.
