Has Anyone Tried Writing For Medium?

United States

I have been looking at Medium lately and am wondering if anyone here has any experience with it. I know that they charge, but I am wondering if it might be useful to drive traffic to my poetry blog--and book if I ever finish it! I hate to pay for a writing site, but I hear good things about the platform --I just don't know anyone that is using it. Anyone here have any experience with it?

What they charge for is the Partner Program and it is meant to help the writers boost one another and get more readers to notice them and get more payouts. I put articles on Medium but I don't post as often and I post on various topics. I am not gathering as many readers as I would like but some start following me anyway. I get payment through what is called Stripe and what is interesting is that every month I get notified that I earned a couple of cents here and there and then they put the money in my account. I kid you not last month I got a whole 4 cents. If I ever figure it all out I will start posting every day and see what happens. I follow up on what is happening on the site and there are conflicting thoughts always that the business articles do the best but then one woman says she only posts about things in her life and does very well too.

@RasmaSandra how is the Partner Program different from a non-paying account and I can't imagine that my poetry would do well there, but maybe law articles???

@RasmaSandra Good to know Rasma! I haven't looked much at Vocal yet. But my situation is changing right now because of the pandemic and so I am going to have to look fr some new avenues of income. Hubpages doesn't seem like it is getting the kind of traffic that it used to--

@divalounger now law articles might not be a bad idea. The paid membership is so you can earn more and more people get to see your articles. However, since you have access to all the articles then you should also read as many articles that interest you from others. I was not doing that but then since I am paying I started and recently I have received two more followers. I do not see much poetry on there. So the idea is to keep on posting and keep on reading and somehow it is supposed to net more. I am in the process now of trying to figure out what I could post and do it at least twice a week. Speaking of earning you might also check out VOCAL if you have not already done so? Also the same kind of system but there I have not signed up for the paid program because I just cannot afford that right now but it is also supposed to be better that way.

I have a couple of poet friends on there--but it seems kinder to business than to poetry

I am ok--although the worst of the pandemic was really hard for me. I live in what was a very high-risk zone and am an asthmatic and my husband has diabetes. I lost 2/3 of my students last spring and had to retool. I also went through a depression. But we are all safe and well. And I had promised myself at the beginning of all this, that everyone in my family was going to make it out ok. And we all did. One daughter is just finishing her master's in choral conducting at University of Washington and is the newly appointed artistic director of the Columbia Children's Choirs in Seattle. My other daughter will be giving birth to a second child, a daughter, in September after a difficult early pregnancy. I am teaching again, all on Zoom, and looking forward to possibly starting up in-person in September. My husband is not quite returned to regular hours at his church--he is a church musician--and I will be singing in public for the first time in July--fully masked, and in an outdoor setting. Singers are just super-spreaders of this virus-- I know that everyone has gone through changes this past year--it will be good to catch up with everyone again! How are you?????

@divalounger You certainly have had a typical pandemic year, but glad to hear that things are improving for you and your wonderful family. Singers are super spreaders of the virus. I’ve been hibernating at home and recently started going out again with a mask and with protocols. Grateful for not getting the virus and happy you didn’t either. Ready for the new normal. Congratulations on the upcoming birth! So exciting!

@DianneN Thanks! So glad to see you here and so glad that you and your family are well and safe! I feel like life will be different, but I am so grateful that we are vaccinated and can return to a more normal existence!

I know one person here is, though I don't know if she's here every day. I don't see her often because she spends most of her time there.

@just4him I know that writing sites do that--time management is always an issue for me--sometimes, I just have to shut everything off and just try and get some work done.

@divalounger I think any writing site can do that. I know I'm here many hours a day.

@MarshaMusselman I am not sure if Hubpages has a regular "niche" for legal articles other than their business section. I am more interested in writing about both how the law affects regular people and what they need to understand about the law and about constitutional law and how it affects us. I am leaning toward my own blog right now--

@divalounger is there a niche at hubpages for that topic? Otherwise why not start your own blog like on WordPress. If it does will you can upgrade it to make money.

I am in the middle of putting together a chapbook of poetry--not a money maker for sure--but I always tend to choose the underdog activities

@divalounger I've published a handful of poems in my lifetime. But I've never made any money off of them.

No experience of this site whatsoever. I do have quite a bit of experience in online earning and I'd say 90+% of the time if a site charges you to provide anything it is not worth it.

@Mike197602 I have the same feeling Mike--they charge $5 a month--but the work that I see there is good, and you can import your blog material easily--or drive traffic to it--but I hate the fact that they charge you--they charge even to read more than a certain number of articles a month

@bagarad I keep thinking about it--Mostly, I am concerned that the quality of the writing is good--and that if I write there, I don't get pigeonholed as just a poet or just a lawyer or just a psychotherapist--I would like to make money as well I suppose--

I was recently looking at both Medium and Vocal to write for. Did you ever start writing for either one, and if so, what was your experience?

I am trying Medium out--we'll see--some people do them both. They publish first on Vocal and then publish the same article on Medium.

I don't like the idea of paying for a site. TSU.Social will be rebooting soon. Another option is Vocal. I'd rather see you use those.
