Prac tomorrow....Also, could you please help me?

Perth, Australia

Tomorrow is my first day starting my Practical Placement at the Childcare Centre. I will be there for two weeks ( Mon - Fri ) 8:30am - 5pm. I am very nervous. After I post this Discussion, I am going to get my things together so I am ready tomorrow morning. I will try hard to come on here tomorrow to talk about my first day but I was wondering if you could all please help me with something. And no worries if you can't, just thought I would ask anyway just in case. But I will be honest, I'm kinda begging for some ideas! So on Wednesday, my teacher will be coming in to see me as well as assessing me. Like how I interact with the children as well as watching me do an activity with them. And that is what I am mainly stressing about. This is what my Assessment Task is word for word: You have been given the task of planning and implementing an activity that encourages children to be aware of cross-cultural relationships, celebrates cultural differences and respects all cultures. Your activity must ensure children gain an understanding of 3 cultures including the cultural differences, heritage, backgrounds and language and traditions that include a problem-solving element. Within the 3 cultures you choose for your activity, 1 must be aboriginal and the 2 other cultures must be the least common cultures found during your research withing your setting. IF ANY of you, have any ideas, my goodness....I would really appreciate it. I'm stressed as hell. Why? I have Monday and Tuesday to bond with the children and work out what their cultures are, decide what activity, buy and / or make things for the activity and then implement it on Wednesday. Like....this is crap to be honest. 2 days? That's all I have to work this all out. Seriously, I would really appreciate your help with any ideas on simple things I can do to teach and encourage 3 - 4 year olds about 3 cultures. So their attention span is roughly 20 minutes so it needs to be short, sweet, and simple. If by any chance any of you have any ideas even if you think it might be silly, please just tell me! It just may help a light bulb go off in my very nervous and blank mind. Thank you so much in advance. *stressful inhale and exhale*

I really wish I could help but you have lots of good ideas below and what seems like helpful links. You seem to have so little time to prepare anything if you are busy all day with them. Good luck with this. Hopefully you'll have a lightbulb moment.

@JudyEv Thank you for taking the time to read this Discussion. The girls at the Childcare Centre all said the same thing, that I had very little time. I guess on a positive note, since being sick and having to have time off I've had more time to think about it. I'm going through this now taking notes and will work on it over the weekend.

What about reading books about different cultures, what the children like to do, the toys they play with, phrases that are common to those cultures. I know being here, I've learned a lot about the different cultures around the world. If you can find age-appropriate books on the different cultures, I'm sure the children will love them. You could even make one of their toys.

Maybe you talk about the clothing of these cultures, then arrange for children to dress up in similar attire.

@VivaLaDani13 We used clothing to simulate other cultures, back in school. It was so much fun and the children loved it!

@VivaLaDani13 I do not have children but I will try my best to come up with some suggestions. Sit in a circle and have them go around and tell something about themselves and their families. I do not know if that is a bit too much for kids that age. Maybe play a game with them and just start chatting with them. Are you supposed to find the different cultures in the class amongst the kids or outside? Maybe bring a picture of some different kids with different cultures and ask to tell you what they see in the picture. Did I give you any suggestions you could use for them. Maybe after the 1st week you can tell it how it is going or how it went. I think the first few days you will e getting your feet wet. I read some of the responses you got and they are very good ones. I probably did not help at all. Sorry.

@Hannihar Hey Hanni, no need to be sorry at all. I am so thankful for you being here giving me ideas! I am only supposed to talk to them about 3 cultures but I am sure I could at least introduce the activity by asking them about theirs. So thank you kindly for suggesting that to me! Thank you for your answer in general. I've taken note of it all.

@VivaLaDani13 I am glad I did help you out. I thought maybe whatever I wrote was not good for you. You are special and I am so glad you are here too. Just take care of yourself. I will not be here tomorrow or next Thursday. Tomorrow is our Jewish Sabbath and next Thursday is a fast day that will be hard and no work on that day so I will hopefully get rest and fast and be with Sophie.

You could also use dolls or puppets and use culturally related clothing at dress up time to show different cultures. I think different foods from different cultures is also a great idea - just check with the centre first about allergies. Hopefully you can find some picture books about different cultures as well to read to the children. I also found a link with some cool ideas for you - let us know how it goes!

I remember going to my youngest grandsons preschool activities when his parents were working. There were about 20-25 children there all under 5 years old. One day we all picked a toy that representing many countries and we all went through some music that was from each of the countries. The teachers had the baskets filled with the toys before we got there. The parents enjoyed that day as much as the children did. That stuck in my head for years and my grandson is now 23 years old. I learned a lot that day as well as loved seeing all the children enjoying it.

it will be tough in starting but I am sure you can do it because you are very friendly so what I think is that you also to become a child while talking about anything. First need to take their trust so it will help a lot. As you are new for them so may you have to give little more time but sure once they like you then its everything easy for you. Best of luck for tomorrow.

first of all, don't worry, i'm sure you'll do fine. i think kids like to watch cartoons and you can find some interesting things on youtube, like: and maybe show them few videos and make cards with something that related to some culture, like the one i'll attach here or you can find what i mean here: https://www.yo-yee.com/en/english-speaker-flashcards/55-nationalities.html and there was also one cartoon, but i don't know what's it called - it's about a boy who gets a call about something important he has to do, but it's in another country and i remember once he went to saudi arabia or something and the girl wore hijab and he learned that people there greet with words "salam" and i thought that was interesting. there are probably episodes where he's meeting different cultures and countries, but i can't remember the name. i hope this is useful. good luck!
Hey kids, did you know about Culture? Well, after watching this video, you'd know! So, don't just wait, join Cartoons time in this video to know more about s...

1st days of everything will always be very stressful as you still are grasping your duties and responsibilities. Those first days will be a bit tough for you but if you persist and do what is given to you then you will be fine I guess. Making mistakes along the way is normal during the first few weeks or months and take advantage of tjis to correct yourself and learn from it. This will make you a better person in your new line of work.

I am sorry I just logged in to mylot. So, how did you do with the tots? By now you must have found out that preschool children simply love you the way you are. You are now their hero. I would have given you that advice - be natural. Sit down on the floor where you could have eye contact with the children. Know their names, ask what they like. Do not ask about the culture. Children are always the same. They love to talk and play and listen when they are asked to. Having fun? You should. You are in the company of the sweetest creatures on earth.

@eileenleyva No worries at all. I am very thankful you read and answered this discussion. I did have some children who wanted to be around me and play with them and talk with them which made me feel good. Thank you so very much for your advice. Very much appreciated! Unfortunately I have to at least talk about cultures as that is my assessment. Otherwise my teacher will not pass me. So it's something I must do even though I'm not really keen on it.
