I am trying to find a .org domain for our NPO but I was thinking from where to buy. Almost all sellers have same name available. I was thinking What will happen if the domain seller site shuts down? There are 2 possibilities I think - 1) I have to re-purchase that domain from some other seller (after period is over) 2) Domain in use, I may keep it because seller is no longer available. What is the actual possibility? Is there any other thing too?

It's important to understand that you never really own a domain name. All that you ever do is to rent the right to use it from a domain name registrar (who, in turn, pay ICANN for the right to provide it to you). If a domain registrar ceases business or incorporates their business with another company, they will transfer the domains they have on their books to another registrar and you (as an existing 'owner') would be advised of that by email. If you want to register a specific domain name it must be available and not registered to someone else. If it is registered to someone else and that person doesn't appear to be using it for an active website, you might be able to contact them to see if they wish to sell it [transfer the rights] to you. You would expect to pay a great deal more for this, even if the current 'owner' no longer wishes to keep it. That kind of deal would have to be negotiated by a broker via the registrar, of course, and it's not something I would advise doing unless the name is very important to you. If you are looking for a .org TLD, then it suggests that you want to use it for a non-profit organisation (because that is what the .org TLD is intended for), which means that you probably aren't in the market for a domain name which is already registered.

@yugocean You will need a host for your site, of course. You will need to pay for that. And you will probably find it best in the long run to have your site properly designed, set up, coded and maintained by a good web site design company. Trying to do it yourself or 'for free' with a well-meaning and philanthropic amateur often leads to disaster at the worst or a very unprofessional and badly maintained site at best. In other words, if you want a worthwhile and usable site, even a simple one, your organisation must be prepared to allocate regular outgoings for the domain name, hosting and maintenance and a capital outlay for the design. You will need to research all of these and present them with a budget - preferably before you go any further.

Thank U for the details, yes it is required for NPO that works wor disability sector. As you said, I can only rent the name, so if I purchase from a domain registrar, next time it may charge more for retaining, then how to deal with such problem? Tell me more about making website and having domain for that NPO. It would be appreceated.
