I Bought Placemats

No big deal. I know. But I have kept a vinyl table cloth on my dining room table for years because, well, to put it bluntly, my family are slobs. Not only do they spill and crumbs all over the dining table, they don't clean up after themselves. Well, my daughter's fiance made a big deal out of it. He hates table cloths. And why cover a table to protect it but then never see it? Okay. Point taken. I order two different sets of placemats from Amazon. When my daughter and her fiance came in today he was overjoyed to see the dining table. I said, "Are you going to clean up after yourself?" He said he would eat in the kitchen. No table and chairs in there, just an "island" or "breakfast bar/coffee station" with stools. "Or eat over the sink," he said. When I went in to ask my daughter what she thought she liked it but... she was eating at coffee table in the living room area. Shaking my head.

Your table looks really pretty. I have the same problem. I keep a tablecloth on my table all the time. I'd rather use place mats but I only have an island in my kitchen too. My dining room table would be a mess if I didn't keep it covered.

My so-called island, which has turned into what my daughter says is a breakfast bar, is a dumping grounds. It is always covered with stuff. One of the things that makes me want daughter number one to move out. Two coffee makers and a bunch of boxes of coffee.

@patgalca my island also has stuff on it. My coffee maker and Kcup holder is on my counter which pretty much takes up that whole space. I think flat surfaces are just catch-all no matter where they are

@Marilynda1225 The k-cups come in long rectangular boxes (Nespresso) and there were 5 or 6 standing on end. After my complaint my daughter bought a lovely wire basket and dumped all of them in one. The boxes are gone and the one basket looks pretty.

We had dinner in there the other night but my husband would just as soon bring his meal into the family room and eat off his lap in front of the television.

@crazyhorseladycx It's just when he is eating alone, basically. If I make a meal for the two of us we will sit down together at the dining room table.

And whose fault is it that they're slobs?

My oldest daughter and her fiance are unbelievable. Can't imagine what their home is going to be like. My husband has a total disregard for cleaning up crumbs. I just don't get it.

Well, it sure looks prettier than my old, gold vinyl table cloth (that was my mother's). And so far they've kept it clean.

I have always used place mats. A personal preference.

My mother used both. Placemats on a daily basis and table cloth on special occasions... seasonal table cloths. She never had a problem with messes but she didn't have my crew to deal with.

I use table clothes to protect my wooden dining table from hot meals and scratches. Even for a glass dining table, I use it as well since I am rather anxious that hot meals can break the glass

@WackyDecor It was fine. It seems to be the only time we can get everyone to sit down for a meal together. But as soon as we're done eating they're up and gone. No help preparing, very little help cleaning up. Not a fan of holidays.

Your choice of placemats is quite nice, I like them. We use a tablecloth because we eat off of an antique walnut table and the heat from the plates can cause the finish to dull, so underneath the tablecloth I have a thin protective pad. There are also lots of marks on the table which don't really make it a good choice for placemats. We always use placemats when we eat outside on our patio furniture.

I have a padding for underneath my table cloth. Actually, the people we bought it from gave us theirs but then my sister gave me a new one as a Christmas gift. This was years ago. I should throw the old one away. It's pretty messed up. We don't have a table outside. Some day maybe.

The place mats look good. Maybe you should organise a seminar for your family members and show them how to eat on them. :-)
