Thailand - the only Southeast Asian country that repelled colonialism. In many ways, it was largely due to the kingship that held the people together. Alas, that was then. With the Thai king the wealthiest ruler on earth, and a people afforded the Hunger Games, the young generation has come out to fill the streets of Bangkok in protestation. Now, now, Thailand has a law that prohibits anyone to criticize the king, or the royal family. But the brave Generation Zee, together with the millennials, will not accept that lock, stock, and barrel, for they know, the king is not holier than thou. So out in the thoroughfares they march, not to hail a king but to oust him.
Pro-democracy protesters in Thailand have confronted a motorcade carrying members of the royal family as it passed through a rally in Bangkok. The protesters...

@eileenleyva saw this in the news. The rich were given time off for lesser reasons. There is no justice in this country.

@eileenleyva so am I. Can't believe that we have gotten so low as a society to treat a mother like that.

Just heard that news too. I think the incumbent King has some bad background that is why the younger generation is not accepting the monarchy as it was with the previous one. I am surprised since when the former King passed away they really mourned for a year and everyone complied with that one. But with this current King it seems like they do not like him anymore. I am still watching what the military has to say about this since I know they are 100% loyal to the monarchy. I think without military backing the civilian uprise it will take a long time before they can topple a ruling monarchy.

@eileenleyva Actually l am quite intrigued by Thai monarchy because they survived long enough and even deterred many colonial invaders from occupying them. l think amongst the ASEAN countries they are the only country that was not heavily influenced by foreign colonial countries. It is sad that the monarch is crumbling down because the seed passed was not properly groomed to be one.

Yes, the present Thai king is an avaricious brute numb to the poor condition of the people. A bad gene. You know more about Thailand than I do.

@rsa101 The Thai monarchy was glorified in the movie 'The King and I.' Yes, Thailand, or Siam, was the only Southeast Asian nation that resisted colonialism successfully. Burma's royalty was eradicated. Our Rajahs were welcoming and hospitable, except for Lapu-lapu, of course. How proud the Thai were, of that little detail - they overpowered the conquerors! What we see now, though, is a monarch numb and greedy. The people are getting hungry, that is why they are flashing the three fingers from Hunger Games. The youth are calling for change in the constitution, the Prime Minister, the governance, and that provision of a 15 year imprisonment arising from criticizing the monarchy be amended.

I also heard about this. As far as I can remember, they also controlled COVID-19.

That is interesting. I have often wondered if it would have b been better or worse if the US had been ruled by a King or Queen

This was King George, the king the framers of the United States constitution did away with.

@RasmaSandra You'll be hooked on the song. That's a superb performance of a genuine singer Jonathan Groff. Plus, playwright Lin Manuel-Miranda, the super genius, got afraid when the royals came to watch Hamilton in London. He was hailed. Ha ha

Amend the constitution, for one. It's in the news.
