Wildflowers in Karijini National Park, Western Australia

The collage shows some of the wildflowers that grow in the Karijini National Park in Western Australia’s north-west. The top two photos show the very pretty mulla mulla or Ptilotus exaltatus which is popular in domestic gardens too. It bears masses of large, conical spikes of feathery flowers. It has fleshy, silver-green leaves and attracts bees and butterflies. Needless to say, it is heat and drought resistant. Bottom left is a type of smoke-bush. There is a great number of varieties of smoke-bush. Bottom right is Sturt’s desert rose, which I’ve already written about.

They all are gorgeous. I spontaneously recognized the desert rose that you posted earlier too. These are definitely desert beauties.

I guess for many tourists, the north is quite difficult to get to. A couple of days we drove most of the day and saw very little. We were reminded again of what a big country it was.

@DocAndersen Don't leave exploring the north too long - especially if you want to go up and down the gorges.

How beautiful - they make quite a presentation! They look so healthy and "sturdy" too.

The country must have been awash with colour at the height of the season.

@JudyEv - In Austin, Texas, a lot of people transplant flowers. Apparently Austin has the perfect climate and soil.

I think all of these will grow in a domestic garden under the right conditions.

@cmoneyspinner Some of our wildflowers don't like to be disturbed and they don't like fertilisers. Others do well however they're treated.

Very pretty flowers. It's good to have drought-resistant flowers.

The plants in the northern parts need to be tough to survive.

I guess we have been cut off from the rest of the world for a long time which helps us have unique flora and fauna.

Yes, they would all be native to Australia, I think. Sometimes South Africa has plants closely related to some of ours.

'n ya know i'd 'lready be most smitten by the desert rose. thanks fer sharin' all this yumminess!

You're welcome. The mulla mullas might not cope with snow, as you say. My sister has grown them in a previous house.

Mostly these would be seen in their native areas although some can now be grown in domestic gardens.
