Yes, our Ice Princess can cook and bake, too. She can bake the old fashioned way without measuring, thanks to her mommy. I began cooking for my father and two brothers when I was 12 years old. I was in charge of dinner on Thursday nights only, when my mother returned to the work force part time at a dress shop Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. My cooking consisted of fried eggs and buttered toast. Yes, every Thursday. Things changed when I got married. Hubs is still raving about my latest concoction ~ prosciutto, peas, shallots in a cream sauce over linguine. Cooking. Either you have it or you don’t.

I definitely don't have it. No matter how hard I try, I suck at cooking. Even when I follow recipe directions meticulously. As a result, I am single-handedly the reason why restaurants in Gainesville stay in business. haha

@DianneN Okay, then I am a great cook and I like taking a break every day from cooking so I can eat out! haha

It is a life skill everyone should have some knowledge of. Hey fried eggs and toast is a start which led you to prosciutto, peas, shallots in a cream sauce over linguine

That was quite a leap and took many years to get there. You’d be surprised at how many people, men especially, who can’t even boil water.

@Elizaby I agree. Some do learn on their own like my brothers. My mother was an awful cook, but we still loved her. lol

@DianneN It is sad that many young teens are not being taught the basics cooking skills that will help them in their adult lives.

I think cooking is like anything else practice makes perfect. The prosciutto dish sounds lovely. That is a cute picture of the Ice Princess.

I believe you, although my mother never got it right. She tried though. Many thanks. I wanted to use up our heavy cream before it went bad and had a fresh package of prosciutto staring me in the face every time I opened the fridge. Hubs wants me to make it again.

I loved to cook, I started to cook when I was 12, on Sunday, when I was home from school. I also loved to bake cakes and this was something that my lovely grandmother (who lived with us) appreciated and encouraged. Mom did not like to cook, her mother yes, I learnt a lot from my maternal grandmother.

I know you love to cook and are so good at it. My mother had no one to teach her, except when my paternal grandmother visited. However, everything was Russian based and not something easily picked up by my mother. I taught myself everything once I married. My friends and family consider me a gourmet cook.

@DianneN My mother had no passion, she cooked because she had too cook, but she did not like. Her mother was an excellent cook, as well as her two sisters. My friends auto invite them and they ask for "home made food" all the time.

@LadyDuck That's terrific. My aunt was a wonderful cook. I never had any interest in learning how to cook as a child or teen. Too busy playing with toys or the boys.

@jstory07 I can’t bake without measuring. I only measure if I’m following a certain recipe when I don’t know what I’m doing. Did your mother teach you how cook without measuring? I read recipes and can taste them as I go. That’s it for me.

Pretty girl! When one is trained in cooking from an early age, one can cook. I agree with you on "Either you have it or you don’t." I was taught to cook rice using firewood made from coconut branches at an early age of 7 or 8 by my mother. The coconut branches were collected by me, my siblings and my mother in the coconut fields nearby. That was my stepping stone in cooking.

Great picture and great that she enjoys cooking too! As others have said, this is an important skill that has been neglected for several years. I think those setting the curriculum thought that it wasn't important enough for school and children would learn at home or 'just pick it up', or they wouldn't need to because they could just have convenience foods. How misguided!

Thanks, Fleur. I also think it's a very important skill that schools should still incorporate into their curriculums. My mother was a horrific cook, but a loving mother, and I learned the basics in school. I'm sure your little and big one are learning plenty from you!!!
