To exercise and diet or not to exercise and diet

Some folks exercise so much maintain good diet, are into yoga meditation and what not, and yet they get hospitalized early. Example Saurav Ganguly - former Indian cricket captain. Others do not maintain diet, do not exercise, are couch potatoes with pot bellies, and yet they are healthy well into their eighties. Genes have their say. I am sure about it. May be exercise, diet and maintaining all that is not really necessary.

Hi there! How are you doing? The only exercise I get is walking and that is not enjoyable in present conditions. I see things I'd rather not see like people not wearing their mask correctly or gathering and chatting in groups I spent a lot of time cooking these last months - which is not compatible with dieting I am fine healthwise right now and I don't want to change my habits just in case it upsets my metabolism. Well that's my story anyway

There's no doubt that exercising and diet do play a big part in longevity. I've been lucky (knock on wood). I'm over 70 and overweight and can't exercise. God has been good to me so far.

Longevity is no fun I think. You have to plan for it financially in a manner that you get something throughout your life and are not denied your own monies. Then again nobody gets too greedy to deprive you. And finally, the aches etc., and need for someone to become care giver and being at their mercy. Thanks but no thanks. I would rather go immediately with a massive cardiac arrest.

Exactly. Almost all sportspersons have some physical ailment before they touch 50s or 60's.

Modern footwear plays a large role in running/jogging injuries. That is why minimalist and "barefoot" shoes are becoming so popular.

There are so many different factors in regards to health, but to say that good diet and exercise aren't important is an overstatement. It's not just genes, but mental/emotional health that plays a large role as well, maybe the most significant role of all. Not to mention external factors that may go unnoticed like environmental exposures to harmful pollutants, etc.

@vandana7 Because diet and exercise are things that we have the power to most directly control. People can choose to exercise and eat as healthy as they can, but emotional state isn't something that can really be chosen and diseases can't be wished away. So, diet and exercise is where a person has the most power to influence their health. So you never exercise or eat healthy? Why are you so against it?

Who earns the most out of this diet exercise emotional state etc.? I do agree that other factors contribute. If so, why are we not focusing on other factors as much as we focus on diet and exercise.

Walking is such a pleasure. I no longer walk briskly. Eating too much is very easy in front of television. LOL

It goes to show that there is no exact science to having a long life. My dad was a life long smoker since age 15 - at age 80 his tests showed his lungs were pretty clear. He was under the sun for his occupation, working with many toxic pesticides, yet he never had skin cancer or any kind of cancer. He ate whatever he wanted and well, his physical activity for work counted as exercise. But what I really think helped his system was his daily sweating (which was A LOT). Well, he has other issues now because of the smoking, but otherwise he is fine, and quite possibly following the footsteps of his own father who was also a smoker and lived to live into his late 90s!

@vandana7 It is difficult to enjoy life sometimes as everything they tell us stresses us out! Don't do this, but do this . . . but don't do that . . . does anyone really know what is best? It's all too complicated. Let's just live simply - and may we all just "be".

Most people that are overweight aren't healthy no matter what it looks like to us. It's better to eat right and get some form of exercise than what you suggest. Genes are a big part of it but often we've no clue what might happen until it does and it's better to maintain than later needing to make lots of changes.

I don't poop in my posts. Kinda ..I want to appear dignified to whoever is reading through. So I will give a sane response. I feel fearing ills of lack of diet and exercise is negative attitude and not positive attitude. I will be eating vegetable Biryani this Friday. Eat your heart out.

@vandana7 Now the holy book takes us for a walk in the clouds where we don't have to die at all. I think, though I could be wrong that the Good Book equates exercise with building temples. Oh my!

I do think genetics play a big part, but sometimes they also warn us about obstacles we need to work with in order to maintain good health. For example, diabetes runs in my family. I've tried to stay active enough and careful enough with my diet to avoid it so far. Thyroid issues also run in my family, and my doctor keeps an eye on my hormone levels.

I wonder why the researchers are not on to this. I think they should study the lives of sportspersons and those muscular actors to let us know what are the possible ailments with that kinda regimen.

It is a big question for me too. My take is follow good diet, keep your stomach in good condition. Avoid constipation and Loose motions. Exercising and walk helps. Yet even once in 4/5 days will do. And above all(and most tough)keep stress away. The last part about stress is what I have difficulty in keeping control. Yet I think it was stress rather than other things that led Saurav Ganguly getting heart troubles. By the way, your new picture on the DP makes me feel as if I have seen you somewhere. By the way were you spying on me a few years back when I was purchasing that Dunkin Donuts before watching a movie??

Genes do play a part of it. I don't diet or need to, thanks for my love of exercising. I'm more flexible, toned, and fit than most women much younger. My doctor told me women would kill to be my weight.
