It finally came in handy...

Years ago I learned sign language by spelling out words through letters. I never learned many gestures, but I did know how to spell out words. Today there was a package that had been sitting near the mailboxes all day, so I went to the resident's door to let her know. She was one of the residents that I never saw much, so I had no idea that she was deaf. When I originally tried to speak, she kept shaking her head, and pointing to her ears that she could not hear, and mumbled a bunch of noise. She kept wanting to shut the door because she could not hear me. After several failed attempts, the Lord reminded me that I used to be able to use my hands to spell out words to the deaf. So I spelled out to her that she had a package downstairs. I watched her read my hands, and it worked. She motioned to me with an "a okay" with her hands that she understood me, and that she would be right there. Even though I never learned very many gestures, I did master spelling words with my hands. I surprised myself that I still remembered how to do it. I guess it is like riding a bike; once you learn it, you kind of never forget how to... It was kind of a nice feeling to know that after all these years, I was able to communicate to a resident that under normal circumstances, most people would not have been able to...

Thanks. I was just glad I could help her understand what I was saying. She has since picked up the package.
