DMV Day...

Jacksonville, Florida

Today I went to DMV to get a renewed driver's license; because it was expiring in May. The one thing I did not have was my birth certificate. I lost it, when I lost all my possessions. My last license I got without the gold star that is now needed for Real ID compliancy. I had an appointment today that I made 2.5 weeks ago, and realized this weekend I was going to need a birth certificate. I decided to keep my appointment anyway (and boy am I glad I did), just so I could ask to make sure I got exactly what I needed. Also... I needed to keep my appointment; so I could get an application to give to my doctor to fill out, so I can get my handicap tag and decal. I had no idea that DMV could obtain a legit notarized birth certificate right there for $15, plus a $6.25 processing fee. The rep just gave me a form to fill out; then she left for a few minutes, and came back with the certificate. She told me that I could keep it since I paid for it, and it would be state compliant to use for anything else I needed it for. The only thing this one did not have is what hospital I was born in, and the doctor who delivered me, like my last one did. It is a pretty simplified version. It came on a 9 x 12 size sheet with a border. So I am very glad I kept the appointment. Now I have a Real ID driver's license with a star. Like I mentioned... I did not have one before. I wanted to get my monies worth out of the last license. Plus... I told them I was an organ donor, and showed them my Florida registration card. So they added that to my license too. This darn license does not even look like a normal license, anymore. No way any thugs could try to duplicate this one. Wow! It is like so colorful! The more I look at it, the more things I find on it. For obvious security reasons, I can't share a photo of it. I keep looking at it wondering if it is real. LOL So if anyone needs a birth certificate...apparently we can go to DMV to get one instead of ordering one online.

I had no idea about the star thing, until my husband's expired on us. We hadn't been aware that it had expired, because he thought he had another year. (ours expire a year apart), so we found ourselves on the road to the DMV. And, while waiting, I was panicking because we had brought nothing with us. Turned out, we didn't need anything. Because both of ours have the star on them. Guess renewing mine will be a breeze. (St. ID since I can't drive).

If you have some kind of State I.D. it's a good idea to renew it weather you drive or not. If you need to present your ID, and it expires, whomever you're trying to do business with, might not accept it. That's actually how we found out my husband's licence had expired. Because the woman at the bank told us, and decided to throw in 'we aren't supposed to accept an expired licence, but... I'm doing you a favor' so.... I would make sure your state I.D. is up-to-date.

But I am sure you will need some form of state issue ID. Most places that require an ID, asks for a driver's license or state ID.
