Accept the way I am.

I was reading a quote - which says "Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference" by Reinhold Niebuhr Everyone of us is different and we behave differently. Some people do not behave the way we want them to be. Ideally speaking, we should accept them the way they are but sometimes we do not. Do you accept others, the way they are or do you try to change them as per your wishes?

I would not say that I accept the others the way they are. There are some people who annoy me because they are not polite or do things in a way I dislike. Anyway I never try to change people.

It is difficult for you to accept some incorrigible souls the way they are because they act as per their own whims and fancies. There are different types of people and how hard we try we cannot change them. We would slightly mold them, if they are willing to listen to us but not much. It is good to hear that you don't try to change others and more or less accept the way they behave.

@LadyDuck Yes, you are very right that many marriages fail because husband or the wife thinks that s/he could change his/her partner, which is not possible. However, it takes time before this realization comes in married life that each partner will have to accept other, the way s/he is.

@dpk262006 We cannot change others. This is why many marriages fail, it is when a woman (or a man) think that it is possible to change their companion. We are what we are and we do not change through our life.

You are right that you just cannot behave the way others want you to, therefore, you just cannot expect the same thing with them. We just cannot change others, we have no option but to accpet them.

Well, we cannot control others. We can give our opinions about someone, but to change is their own choice. Other than that, I can accept the way they are to a point . . . but I do not have to like or agree with it. Instead of changing of them, I would choose to change how I deal with them.

Yes, you are very right that we could give suggestions to someone - how he could change himself/herself. We just cannot force him to act on our suggestions. Yes, it is our choice whether we want to agree with someone's opinion or not. You are right that instead of changing others, we should try to change ourselves.

@much2say Yes, you are very right that no one takes our honest suggestions in right earnest and if they are required to change themselves and they don't, they will have to face the consequences. And if they don't want to change themselves and they don't change, they will have to accept us, the way we are.

@dpk262006 I have found that even if one is told suggestions, they never listen , Most people won't change. So these days I don't even bother. But they will have to deal with their own consequences. If I accept them, then they will have to accept me, even if I choose to not be around them anymore.

This is a prayer, called the Serenity Prayer. I think if that person or persons were doing bad things, yes I would want to try to change them. If they are a lost cause, then I have no choice but to accept the way they are.

Yes, it is not less than a serenity prayer. You are right that if someone is going wayward and is erratic, he needs to be counseled and advised and if he could act upon our advice, he should try to change himself. However, some of the people do not change and they cannot be changed, and if we have to deal with them, we will have to but accept them, the way they are.

@Jlyn10 Alas! It could be possible. In my view everyone should be taught how to make adjustments in life and how one should be flexible in life, so that when need arises he could change himself.

@dpk262006 But it would be good if everyone can be changed from worst to better. Then the world would be a better place to live in.

@dpk262006 No two people think same.Everyone is unique and this uniqueness makes them special. If the person is behaving inappropriately it is our duty to show them the right path but we don't have any right to change their morals or what they think is good according to them. For example a person is vegan we have no right to force or change him into a non-vegan. But if the person is doing something wrong it is our duty to try to change him and show him the right path. So I think it depends on the situation.

You are right that everyone is different and we need to accept this fact. If we try to change someone, it won't help much. If someone is wayward and erratic, we could advise him to be correct but we just cannot change him. You have given a good example of food choice.

@CuriousGab Yes, you are very right if we could imagine ourselves in their place, we could be more practical. As we ourselves don't want to change, therefore, it will be wrong to assume that others will change.

@dpk262006 We should imagine ourselves in their position before trying to change others. What if they do the same.Would we accept whatever other person tell us to change in ourselves. Everyone have certain morals they follow which they think are right and we cannot easily bend it. So we should not blame them when they don't accept what we say.they will need some time.

Yes there are people who don't accept the people and try to change them as per them. I am not that type because when I cannot change for people then how can I accept them to change for me.

It is good to hear that you do not expect others people to change for you. Yes, you are very right that when you cannot change yourself, how could you expect from others, therefore, you accept them, the way they are.

We are each different in our own way. Sometimes I don't like how someone else acts, but I ignore their actions as long as those actions don't hurt anyone else. I can only do my best. I'm just human.

Yes, you are very right that we are different in our own way and we have to accept this fact. Many a times we do not like how others behave, we wish in our mind - "Alas! this person could change his behavior" however, practically it does not happen. Ignoring such souls, who trouble us, would be the best option.

Great quote by sir Reinhold Neibuhr. I greatly believe that one should never change themselves for the sake of the so called society or for people but should surely change themselves according to the situation they are in I personally never expect from anybody to change as per my own will. Hope to hear from you soon:)

Welcome to myLot. You meant to say that one should not change himself if he is being forced by others but if the situation demands he should adjust himself. Yes, you are right that no one could force me to change you or me, as we have our own characteristics. It is good on your part that you do not expect others to change, as per your wishes.
