An unexpected gift

We have made friends here with a couple somewhat older than ourselves. They are a lot of fun and we enjoy each other’s company. On Christmas Eve, we were presented with a small gift which was most unexpected but very much appreciated. It consists of a kitchen towel, together with a sundae glass filled with Lindt chocolates – my favourite kind. Sometimes it’s the small, unexpected gifts which really touch your heart.

Oh, that was very nice of them, especially since they're fairly new acquaintances.

@JudyEv I'm sure they are. I don't think you and Vince would become friends with any other kind of people.

That was so sweet of them to do up a little gift like that for you. It is the little things that mean the most. Lindt is my favorite chocolate also, nothing else even compares.

@JudyEv I made up a little netting package of Lindt chocolates tied with ribbon to give out at the baby shower. Nobody refused those.

@Juliaacv When we have people to stay I usually put a Lindt chocolate under their pillow.

Oh, I love Lindt, too! And my friend Juanita gave me a big ceramic dish full of them when she came down last week. I've been good and only had one (or two) a day trying to make them last. I got the regular red-wrapped ones, some dark blue ones, some yellow (vanilla) ones and some of the hazelnut ones.

They are all scrumptious, aren't they? I like the red ones the best but all are very acceptable. I try to limit mine too to one or two a day but it's difficult sometimes.

What a sweet gesture! I’ve thought about a retirement community, but my neighbors and I have lived here for decades so we basically ARE a retirement community! I hope you and Vince had a great Christmas!

I think that's called 'Ageing in Place'!! It is easy to make friends here but I'm not sure we shouldn't have waited a year or two more. But who knows? It's done now and it gets easier as I go.

Oh, that was so sweet of that couple! And, it is kind of what I have been planning to do here. I have already begun collecting containers and planning what I want to put in them. But I decided to start this in 2022 because money was too tight for that this year.

I've stored the idea in the back of my mind too. They would be quite simple to do.

@JudyEv Exactly! When my mother was still working, she was a mortgage broker and would make little gifts like this for coworkers, competitors, and customers every year.

@Chellezhere My husband was business administrator in a school and he bought gifts for all his staff each year. Stuff like this would have been a much cheaper option.

@DocAndersen So true. And sometimes it's something you've mentioned in passing, maybe months ago, and the person has remembered. Those are special too.

That's very sweet of them. And yes you're right, little surprises like that can make your day. I still remember when, years ago, one of my work colleagues surprised me on St David's day with a bunch of daffodils (St David is patron saint of Wales and daffodils are national symbol).

That would be very special. When we had couch-surfers, Vince would try to learn their national anthem and play it on the piano for them. Some would cry.

That was wonderful of them to give you a beautiful and useful gift. I'm talking about the chocolates, not the towel, you admitted you don't like to do chores any more than I do. I'm sure it will be put to good use.
