Can someone explain these to me?

As we sat down to our Christmas lunch this year (well, last year now, but you know what I mean) Little One asked if we had any crackers. We hadn’t bought any, because they are normally relatively expensive for what is basically a cylinder of thin card with a terrible joke, a paper hat that makes you look like an idiot and a useless gift that almost always gets thrown away immediately or else just clutters the place up for years afterwards. Just a waste of money and materials. We all agreed that they are a waste of time, and that we should have made our own instead. But of course it’s no use thinking of that just a few minutes before you need them! So with that in mind, I thought I would plan ahead. Crackers aren’t particularly difficult to make, since they mainly consist of a cylinder of card and some decorative paper, and we already have a large collection of toilet roll inner tubes and plenty of used wrapping paper we can re-purpose. The only part that can’t be home-made are the snaps, which are of course what make them ‘crackers’. So I thought I would have a look now, and then we could be organised in plenty of time! I Googled ‘cracker snaps’ and found a few suppliers. I was intrigued by these (see link below) which claimed to be eco-friendly and which suggest you re-use your crackers - but I was stumped by the description of them as ‘silent and pet-friendly’. If a thing, the sole purpose of which is to make a ‘bang’, is silent, what does it do? And what’s the point? Maybe they just confer that bit of added tension as you pull the cracker - but then anyone who’s ever pulled a cracker that failed to go ‘bang’ would know what a disappointment that is! No, I've never tried them. But, perhaps they work differently?

Noisemakers often used at parties I suppose is what you are referring to.

No, but I think they are cool. We don't really have them in this country, and I wish we did.

You could try making some too! Although maybe with the normal snaps that make a noise!

I’ve never made them before but have used some at New Years. I think they are mostly just a silly thing since so many places ban fireworks to make some noise with.

They are rather silly, but they have been around almost 200 years. The older ones were better!

Used to love them when I was a kid, but that was for the snap. Haven't bought any in years

So what would be the point of a silent snap? That's what's got me stumped!

I admit I thought of the edible snacks until I saw the picture and also paid attention to who was posting. I cannot imagine silent snaps being of any use at all.

It would seem to be even more useless than a chocolate teapot!

Never tried them here. Sounds interesting and I can see how a child would be into them.

I don't recall ever having seen one but I'm not sure if I did when we were in Germany in the late 1950s when I was between 6 and 9. So much of those 3 years is a mystery to me as I recall so very little.

I know a lady that made her own. She had me over one day to show me how to do it. She even had something to make them pop. I don't do well with arts and crafts, so I never made my own. I prefer to buy them. They are fun.

It's the things that make them pop that puzzled me - what would be the point if they are silent?
