Garbage segregation

While I was on my Mac this morning, the sound of somebody entering our village with a megaphone caught my attention. There were 4 of them from the city's General Services Department. They were reminding residents to segregate garbage into biodegradable and non-biodegradable. However, they are advising residents not to put out the biodegrable trash because the garbage collectors won't pick them up. We are advised to make the biodegradable trash into compost. I told them that that was not a good thing to do because many residents do not have that space to dig a compost pit. Besides, when you put bio-degradable trash in the compost pit, you will be attracting rats and the city will be rat-infested. I'd rather that the rats are concentrated in one area - that is the dumpsite - because it would be easier to contain them. They also advised that people put out their trash an hour before the garbage truck comes. I told them that was not practical because the dogs and cats are going to scratch the trash bags and scatter the contents. I told that I made it a habit to put out our trash about 15 minutes before the truck comes at dawn. Other people put out their trash at night that is why trash is scattered all around.

I wish everyone of us would do this. Garbage has been one of the major problems in the Philippines.

I wish we do have that here. It may take a lot of work but it's good for the environment

My kitchen waste/compost container is now ready for use. I instructed my wife to strictly segregate her biodegradable kitchen was in a small container I provided and I will take care of putting them away in the lard container that I bought. I already placed yellowed moringa leaves inside so they will serve as base material for the compost. I also provided another small container (from Skyflakes container) for plastics, aluminum and other non-biodegrable materials.

You have nice points to consider over there you might want to submit your suggestions to them so they can study and improve their collection policies to much better services they provide to their community. I also suggest having different schedules for picking up the bio and non-bio waste instead of leaving the biowaste to be recycled/composted. In our condo, we are also advised to segregate them and they will just sort it out in the basement when the garbage truck arrives to pick them up. They do have separate dates for the two kinds of garbage to be picked up.

I already voiced out my suggestion to them and they even wrote my name down. The garbage truck comes every day between 5 and 6 AM. Because they won't be picking up biodegradable trash anymore, I am planning to buy another lard container from the bakery and I already told my wife that I will put her kitchen wastes inside the lard container and top it up with soil till the container is full. Every time we put kitchen waste in that container, I will top it up with some soil. When the container is full, we will repeat the same process in a second container. When the second container is half full, I will them pour out the contents of the first container in a compost pit and cover it with soil. We will repeat the same process each time one container becomes full and I will be digging another compost pit when one gets full.

@sunrisefan I think so too that is why I didn't buy it. It was looking too good to be true that they can compost kitchen waste and turn it into a soil-like substance that they said could be added to your garden and can be disposed of safely since they are just like soil that you can throw if you do not have a garden to place them.

You are right about compost, we have special containers where to throw biodegrable trash to make compost, to avoid to attract slugs and mice. We have to put our garbage bags inside a large container and close the lid, no bags must be left outside.

@sunrisefan I am not talking of our individual garbage bin. We must buy bags where to collect our garbage, the garbage must be separated (plastic, paper, glass, domestic waste), the bags placed in the large bins on the road, where they are collected twice a week. Here is a photo.

I have a lid on the container and I placed a pot of plant on it to make sure that the cats won't mesh with the contents. I bored small holes on the base of the container so that any fluid would seep out. I also bored small holes beneath the lid so that the contents can "breathe".

@sunrisefan, we're making a compost pit. We have space tired of the garbage collector.

Yes, that's true. And there's only one man who picks the trash - the driver because his truck has a mechanical claw to pick up the trash bin. Here in our country there are as many as 5 who come with the garbage truck including the driver.

Sounds like you are doing your trash the right way. Many others never follow the rules.

We started using the garbage compost container last night. I don't mind if others don't follow the rules as long as I follow :)

Garbage segregation is a good idea and I wonder why people seem to have a hard time following it.

Segregation is fine; it's the composting that many are unable to comply because of lack of space or no space at all. My kitchen waste/compost container is now ready for use. Swift compliance :)

That would create a problem because garbage would then be piling up. The community will be affected.

Dogs and cats are the reason we use heavy plastic containers we set at the roadside with our trash in them. The trash collectors dump the trash into their truck and put our trash cans back beside the road again.

The authorities don't think these things through sometimes. I don't see how you can make compost if it's going to attract rats and other vermin.

Sometimes they legislate just for the sake of "performance" not thinking if the legislation is doable.
