Today was our weekly grocery shopping trip. And, we hit Winn-Dixie. The trip went mostly as planned, but during check-out, people were complaining constantly about the lack of cashiers. Despite people (myself included) pointing out, hey... it's not like they want to work with so little, it's that all thease places are hiring, looking for employees, but no one wants to work. They have time to stand in line and complain, but don't want to work. I worked customer service for six years. I know how demanding a job it can be. And, I understand why no one is chomping at the bit to work. But..... dam..... seriously people? You can work, then do it yourself.

I see both sides of this. Stores are short staffed. I get it. As a shopper, I don't want to scan and bag my own groceries unless the store offers a discount to do their job. I go to the market to shop. Not to work. The store has a responsibility to have enough cashiers at checkouts to provide the service customers expect. When shoppers have to stand in line an unusually long time, they should complain. Self checkout is great with only a few items but 200 dollars worth of groceries works better at a register with a checker. Managers and employees from other departments should step up and provide enough checkers so that lines aren't long with people complaining. That's just good business.

@Kandae11 That's a good question. They must have found another way to get by. I fear more are depending on government subsidies to exist. Once enough people figure out that they can ride for free, there won't be enough people left to pull the wagon. Strange times. It's as if we were being groomed for Socialism.

Earlier in the pandemic l don't suppose there was much hiring going on. However things have changed now - so where are the job seekers?

It's true! So many jobs and no one wants to work. Either they're wealthy or bilking the government. Disgusting!

I know. You can not seem to go ten feet now a days without someone hiring. However, the vast majority are in customer service. I can get why no one wants to work those jobs, but we still need people to. If I were superwoman and could be in ten places at once, I would.

You have a good point that any of us can earn a living, then work and earn a paycheck.

If more people were willing to, it would make life easier on everyone. I get disability and ligitimate reasons why a person can't work, but we have a lot of healthy able-bodied people who chose not to.

@kaylachan True. I wish places paid employees, even ones like cashiers and fast food a livable wage... maybe not a life of luxury, but still....but that would mean things getting more expensive and if essentials are more expensive, then how does that work out? But yes those less than glamorous jobs like cashier , cleaning, etc... are much needed roles....

No one to work? In our country the rate of unemployment is very high. Everyone is looking for a job. In your place is the opposite. People don't want to work.

Yep. Pretty much. A lot of people are short-handed, but people would rather sit on their butts all the time then work.

@kaylachan And there are who are like that. They're social parasites.

That would irk me too. Long ago I was a cashier . . . it's not like any employee can just hop behind any register and plug away - there IS a process. And these days many stores are just extremely short handed - if only people understood and exercised more patience.

I totally agree with you, I am so used to working at home and really would have no way to get to a store for work but you know right now I would be willing to work part-time at least two days a week just to see people, Too bad there are not more people like me who can get around and do the work,

I don't really have reliable transportation, either. But, if I did I'd consider going to work for some place if I had to.

Same situation here. Few counters are open and lines are very long. I hear some customers complain but most people just keep it to themselves

It was more crowded than usual at Winn-Dixie yesterday.
