Youngest grandson is here

Landon, our 12 year old grandson (Tammy and Jay's son) is here today and tomorrow. Then he goes back to Robert's and then home next weekend. Kids are on Easter break this week. His parents are on a cruise, so Landon's here with all of us. He just fixed a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and I told him about how when he and Nathan were little, I would cut their PBJs into different shapes, sometimes a star or circle. I even tried to cut one in the shape of the letter N for Nathan, but that was too tricky! Of course Landon is on his electronics. It's beautiful here today, sunny and mild. Dale's gone fishing and I'm looking forward to leftover catfish stew for dinner later. Landon will probably want another PBJ. If he were here for the summer, we'd work on a few things. He's a good kid, but let's just say that his parents don't share the same ideas of raising kids that we do. If you have grandkids, are they being raised like you raised their parents (your children)? If it's different, is that a good or bad thing?

We had no children, so we have no grand kids. Surely my brother did not raised his daughter as I would have done.

@1creekgirl My mother was horrified how he grew up his daughter and also his divorced wife was not happy. Of course his daughter was very happy to have total freedom, but at 15 you are too young to have total freedom.

@LadyDuck You're right. I had very few rules or expectations from my parents. They were just lucky I wasn't a wild child by nature.

My kids are still somewhat young . . . but I can see how there are definitely generational differences in the way kids are brought up as we see the family dynamics from school all the time. I've heard complaints from the grandparents who take care of the grands . . . even they shake their heads about how their own kids are raising the grands.

A friend of mine told me about how different her daughter was about raising her kids. She told me that there seemed to be no discipline for the most part because her daughter feels that kids need to develop their own sense of self. I'm not sure I'd raise my kids that way if I had any. A sense of self is all fine and dandy but a 4 year old isn't really prepared to dream up a sense of self, are they?

How can a child learn self discipline if he was never taught it to start with?

I have no grandkids yet, but l would hope that parents and grandparents could probably share ideas. At the end of the day both parties would want the best for the children.

I have no kids, so no grandkids. My dog was raised thinking she owned the house, so it’s a good thing I didn’t have kids!

Landon is a very handsome young man. My son and his wife have raised their boys similar to my parenting but my daughters make me shake my head sometimes with their parenting. I'm just grateful I didn't have social media and electronics to deal with when I was raising my kids.

I think the internet has caused so many problems with this generation. Even parents are too busy with their gadgets to sometimes do the right thing with their children.

Thanks, Carol. I truly am blessed through no merit of my own.
