Do gadgets make our lives easier?

I started writing a response to a post by @MarieCoyle about inventions, and the response got so long I had to make it into a post of its own. Years ago (in the 50 and 60s) there was much talk about the life of leisure that we were all destined to enjoy, with so many labour-saving devices making life so easy. So what happened? Now it seems people are more harried and stressed than ever. It seems to me that people always want more and more 'stuff' so they have to work more to earn more to pay for it all. And they also just make more work for themselves in other ways as well, often due to peer pressure. For example decades ago, the family clothes were washed once a week, by hand, in a mammoth effort by the women of the household. People wore the same clothes every day (because that was all they had, pretty much) and made an effort to keep them clean with overalls, aprons and such, then they wore their clean 'best' clothes on Sundays and special occasions. Everyone was in the same position. Nowadays people have so many clothes and shoes, they have to buy more furniture to store them all, and often they only wear a garment once and then put it straight in the wash. They are afraid to be seen wearing the same garment two days in a row - what will their friends say? And forget ‘keeping up with the Joneses’ now they want to keep up with the social media influencers who are constantly showing off new clothes, which they don’t even own a lot of the time. So now, rather than having lots of free time because a washing machine is doing the work once a week (as envisaged when they were first invented), instead far more time is spent every day putting things in the machine, taking them out, hanging them up and bringing them in or putting them in and out of the drier, perhaps ironing them and then folding and putting them away. And of course it all uses more of our precious water, causes more pollution with all the detergent, uses more electricity to run all the machines (contributing to global climate change), and also wearing out the clothes faster so that more have to be bought, costing more, causing more energy use and pollution in the manufacture, causing more problems with disposal of the old clothes and the worn out washing machines etc. etc. Will humans ever learn? I suspect not. They are too susceptible to the opinions of others. All rights reserved. © Text and image copyright Fleur 2022.

This is the sad reality. Humans the more they have the more they want and they lose the sense of what is really important in life. May be they will realize one day, often when it's too late.

@58lordstreet - I agree, 4 in a house and 4 cars, 4 phones, 4 computers... this is too much.

@58lordstreet Prices are certainly going up and I'm sure this will bring some benefits as well as difficulties.

people will have to make choices now beacause we wont be able to afford everything like we were getting used to - five people in a house cant all have phone contracts etc

That clothesline takes me back. It as all we had for years and I loved the clean fresh smell of the clothes. I never try to keep up with anyone. I avoid drama at all costs. Living the simple life is good.

Growing up we had 2 clotheslines and used them a few times a week. I remember one day, one line broke after my Mom had all the white clothes hanging already. Was she ever mad as she had to wash them again.

@marlina I've had that happen once too. And it was doubly annoying because my Mum had stored a heap of coal underneath!!

I feel like spring is finally here when I can hang my clothes on the line and they are actually dry when I get them in

I've always been of the mind that washing clothes does more harm to them than wearing them a few days in a row.

They definitely get worn out more quickly from all that tossing around in the washing machine.

Inventions such as washing machine are double-edged sword which make light work of what we used to do by hand, but they cause us a big carbon footprint.

I still only wash once a week except when its time to do curtains and throw blankets. Often wear my clothes more than one day. My critters dont care and I dont either. I do put on new before going out but mostly because my clothes by then smell like my animals.

It seems anyone can call themselves an influencer, but you need a few followers to have anyone to influence! But who knows, try making videos about your style and see if you might be the latest to take off!

May be yes, but with easiness they have bring some bad things too. Just as you mentioned about clothes, few of them are making us unhealthy too. All depend on us how we use them.

Well said. I think we've forgotten how to enjoy leisure time, kick back and relax. I do remember the days when clothes were hung on the line to dry and life wasn't filled with "things". I'm all for the convenience of modern inventions and have many but the older I get the more I miss some of those so called "good old days" and having less interest in stuff

@Fleura I haven't hung clothes on the line in years and always put my stuff in the dryer, I do miss how nice clothes smelled after dryng in the sun. It isn't very common here but I"m sure some people still hang their clothes on the line. I'm betting my grandchildren wouldn't even know what a clothespin is.

@Marilynda1225 With increasing energy prices and concerns for the environment I think people may have to return to good old fresh air!

My mother always fusses about all the clothes I have. She often says she doesn't have many clothes, but then she fusses that she has no shorts to wear. Recently I gave away a lot of jeans and some dress shirts. I bought only 4 pairs of jeans. I am going to go through my t shirts soon. I know the shirt I wearing right now I'm going to throw away because it doesn't fit anymore.

I think quite a few of my clothes are coming to the end of their lives, they are all about 20 years old and just not fit to be seen any more!

There are pros and cons to all things. I like the technology that we have but at the same time I think that we've become too dependent on it.

Technology has greatly evolved in the past years. The gadgets are truly a great help with making our work and simple tasks easily done. It's just that humans use them in a wrong way.

I've been considering a post like this one for some time. You hit the nail on the head. Many of these 'inventions' just cause more time and more work, not to mention money. Oh, some of them are wonderful. I don't want to have to wash my clothes in a creek, but so many of the things we do seems to be a lot of time wasted that could be spent on something enjoyable. No wonder so many people have gone back to basics, live off the grid, try to lead a simpler life. It's bad when we realize that in many cases, we don't really own our time saving inventions, they own US. And often, the price involved isn't worth it at all. Great post, Fleur!

@Fleura I think as we grow older we realize all of these special things to supposedly make things easier often just make more work.

Yes, in summer, I change clothes every day. I will prepare at least six sets of clothes, change one set every day, and then wash them in the washing machine on weekends.I think the automatic washing machine makes me and my family relaxed and clean In spring, autumn and winter, I change my clothes every two days.

I think I get your point. I think that people will always fill in the gap that we save the time saved from having a gadget or appliance. We always fill in the space or savings it makes. Same on Air conditioners there is a new kind of AC nowadays that says you can save a lot on electricity. it may be true but you will be tempted to use it longer than when you used to since you have this thinking that you are using a technology that is saving you money but in reality, you consume more since you extend its use.

That is happening in our house. We don't wash clothes once a week we wash every other day or almost every day because it's so easy to put the clothes in the washing machine. But I think technology has actually help us

It is easy, but it's causing more pollution, wasting more water and energy, and ultimately wearing the clothes out faster as well!

Way back then, life is so simple. Life span is long. We breathe pure air, we drink sweet water. Now, we buy bottled water and maybe soon with our experience of covid, we will buy a handy oxygen cylinder just to breathe fresh air. We are free frolicking by then but now with fear of the breeze touching our face.
