Elliot is the latest addition to our arboreal family. His full name is Elliot Pecan (pronounced pee-can). His mate, Pawnee Pecan, will be joining us at the end of the month. The trees are my Father's Day present from my sons. We will be planting them in the backyard. In a number of years, they will offer shade and, hopefully, our own fresh pecans. For now, we will have the enjoyment of watching them grow. Have you ever received a tree as a gift?

I pronounce that tree puh-caan. And yes, I once received an evergreen tree as a gift. My first wife ran it over with the lawnmower.

@DaddyEvil — at least it explains why she’s your EX-wife.

How cruel she must have been to do that to a poor defenseless sapling.

@DWDavis I never did find out if she did it on purpose or not.

I like them right out of the shell or roasted with a light bit of salt.

Pecan trees...neat! Not as a gift per se, but I got a free one a few weeks ago.

The National Forest nursery near here gives away free tiny saplings of evergreens native to the area each year.

I have - and various plants too but I was never able to keep most of them long. The trees did better than the plants. How long before the pecan trees bear fruit?

If both make it through the first few years, I'm hoping for some pecans by year four or five.

@DWDavis Trees can be long-term commitments, especially nut-bearing ones. We planted an oak tree on our farmlet. Hopefully, over the years, subsequent owners will like it.

I have 5 evergreens growing along the fence line now. I planted 3 last year and 2 this year. They are all growing well. I hope I have as much luck with the pecan trees.

It's nice watching the trees grow. So far, I've only received a real Christmas tree as a gift.

The cedars I planted look much like Christmas trees now. The tallest one is about 7 feet.

You even named your trees, how sweet! Or is that the variety of Pecan each of them is.? Do you have to have two varieties to produce?

The names are the varieties of pecan trees. We decided to stick with calling them by their names as an easy way to identify which tree we're talking about. My son told me that the research he did said you needed two trees to cross-pollinated if you wanted to see fruit. We won't know if it worked for a few years yet.

Hi Elliot, nice to meet you. I have never but sure is smart, considering the world needs so many more plants to combat climate change. Your sons are genius's but I guess we know why since they come from you. I will take my 5 dollars in the next plant you send me.

When Elliot grows to full size, he will sequester quite a lot of carbon, as will his mate.

NO, I have never received a tree as a gift. That's a good gift one can give as a gift on special occasions.

I have given trees before. I have also had trees planted in the national forest in memory or honor of someone.

Rose bushes are so lovely. Our sons gave two to my missus a few years ago. She's still trying to get the hang of getting them to fill out and show more than one of two blooms.

My folks live down closer to the NC coast than we are and used to have two huge pecan trees in their yard. Sadly, both were struck by lightning within a couple of years of each other. We lost my dad a year ago. I'm planting these two trees as a living memorial to him, but only I know that's why I asked for them for Father's Day.
