Difficult Boss

I was doing everything I can to help out each of my team mates and also my Boss. And I am very much appreciated by them. But then I filed a leave just for 2 days, just a beach trip. Friday I had an overwhelming list of task but I just finished just about 70% of it. I was trying to continue working on it during week end but my 6yr old child got a boil on his but cheeks so I had to assist on his every move because I know that that hurts like hell. And it started to get better at Monday night. Monday was holiday so I had the time to focus on his treatment. Tuesday I tried to finish everything I can but still has a few tasks left before Wednesday my first day of leave. I did not finish all my tasks and there wasn't any urgent things so I was hoping that it should be fine to work on those on Friday when I get back. But then my boss was pissed because of it, saying I neglected my duties, I should've finish all those before my short vacation. I mean was it wrong for me to unwind just for 2 days? For my self I think it was unfair that she did that to me. I know that it was really wrong to leave over due tasks unattended but I thought to my self that I deserve to have a short break. Because judging from these last few months I have been very much helpful for the team. Every time a team member asks for an emergency leave I would be there to cover up for their work while they are out and while keeping up for my own tasks as well. I have been working as a virtual assistant with the company for over 6yrs now. And up till now my hourly rate is $4.1. I like the job inspite of those ups and down that I have experience over the year actually that is why I cannot have my self to resign just from that.

Since I lack sufficient information to fully evaluate everything from the information you communicated to us, it is quite challenging for me to evaluate your condition at this time. As long as they are okay with it, I don't see any issues with you taking some time off for yourself. I really don't know if your employer has a policy in place around taking time off. How urgently did they need to complete the duties that remained unfinished? Can't you delegate things to someone else at work to help you finish it while you're on break? I believe you ought to have told your manager that you won't be able to complete it and asked someone else to take it over.

they are actually fine me taking time off, And I know for sure that those tasks left is not urgent and can wait since I have been doing those for the past 6yrs. It's just felt unfair for me is all. It's always like out of 10 that you have done even it's just once she would say things that can be considered insult. I mean she is nice most of the time. But whenever you make a very slight mistake she would burst! lol. I mean we cannot be "always" perfect with our work, even though I know for my self that I have done everything to be cautious but still mistakes happens. And it wasn't intentional for sure.

@joeyaj Have you informed the recipient that the assignment would not be completed in time? If not, perhaps you could have temporarily passed the task to a colleague so that it could be completed while you were away. Despite everything that goes on at work, I don't know whether your employer was a little envious that you managed to get a break.

@rsa101 Yes, that might have been my wrong move, I did not inform about it because I was used to it actually that I will just do it when I get back since I will be just away for 2 days. Thank you so much for responding to my discussion. It also helps me to think about possible things that I wasnt thinking before in regards with this.

The thing is that the do-gooders sometimes get more attention when they slack, intentionally or not. No one notices the lazy workers because it is expected that they are just lazy. So the good workers get the brunt of pain when things go wrong. Unfortunately it turns good workers into lazy ones eventually.
