The canola crops are looking good this year

We have just moved into the last month of winter in Western Australia and, on the farms, the crops are looking very healthy. The riders at the last endurance ride had some wonderful farm tracks to ride on and, as you can see, the canola (rapeseed) crops made for a wonderful background. It was a cold, blustery day and the sun didn’t come out for long but, when it did, the yellow canola was bright and beautiful. The five horses in the top photo all did 80 kms (50 miles). The rider at the back is only about 13 or 14 and was riding with her mother. After the mother had to withdraw, the young girl rode the second 40 kms on her own. In the lower photo, the horse is a retired pacer. It has been out of action with ulcers and is just now returning to form. It is certainly looking good here. These photos were both taken by Vince and are copyright.

I don't have to travel half around the globe to see such a landscape. It looks exactly the same where I live in the south of Germany.

We saw similar scenes in France and Germany too when we were there.

Those flowers certainly do add a splash of bright colour don't they. Here that crop is usually called rape, canola is definitely a nicer name.

It was rape or rape seed for some years then it became canola. I don't know where 'rape' came from but yes, canola is better.

The photos are beautiful, like always! I'm sure, even without the sun that bright yellow looked beautiful alongside the riders! I'm glad her mom let her finish out the ride instead of making her stop when she did.

@JudyEv They look really bright on my screen. I'd be very happy with those pictures. I'm sure the other riders watched out for her while they were riding, though. (That would have been a long ride for me back when I rode horses all the time. She has a right to be proud!)

The photos don't appear very bright on my screen. I'm hoping they might be a bit brighter for other people. It's a long way to ride 25 miles perhaps without any company when you've already done 25 miles. She would be a tired little girl at the finish but she was happy to go on without her Mum.

@DaddyEvil It's good to know the photos look okay. I have a new computer now (haven't used it yet) and hopefully I'll get a better representation.

@judyev We have fields of it around our house at certain times of the year. A very noisome colour it is in strong sunshine.

That is so nice to see the farm all yellow. I wonder how they are harvested and extracted as oil. I know they are one of the recommended healthy oils used in cooking.

@JudyEv Interesting looks like it is like grains? Does it have other products besides oil?

They are harvested with big machines just like wheat or oats would be harvested. The seed is sent off to be processed into oil.

@rsa101 I think it is mostly used for oil. One site says it is also used for biodiesel and bio-plastics. The residue may be used for animal feed, pet food and fertilizer.

Canola in bloom with the sun shining on it is brilliant, photos rarely do it justice. When we were headed away a month ago we drove by some canola fields. One particular field, close to the road, was filled with people taking pictures. It actually made the news, that these city people, who had never seen canola before, all decided to stop and take pictures of themselves and their passengers in the field. There was significant damage to the crop as a result. Viewing such a crop is lovely in a picture as you have it or from the roadway.

@JudyEv They were mostly immigrants that I could see, and they have very little regard for anyone but themselves. Without having an easement to be on the property the owner was able to press trespassing charges.

@Juliaacv Most of our paddocks are fenced but where we lived before the orchards often weren't. People would stop and help themselves to apples, etc, which was pretty bad behaviour really.

As you say, it's much brighter in real life. The riders were told to stay out of the crop. It's a wonder the people couldn't have worked it out that going in the crop was a bad idea.

I had a black pony when I was young and we rode 50 miles just the once. The sport was only beginning at the time and there weren't many opportunities to do it.

We call this rapeseed or oilseed rape. I’ve never heard the name Canola. The flowers appear late spring here and affects my breathing when I pass the fields. We are growing more and more of this in the UK for the oil. Looks fabulous when in full bloom.
