...when it was originally on TV? It was a really big event and one of the first (if not the 1st) mini-series' on TV. People were talking about it everywhere. Have you seen it? What did you especially like about it?

I wish they would have more family-friendly TV events like Roots on today. Just think how much history children would get from a story like this. Maybe someone ought to consider re-televising it, because it never goes out of style.

I have seen it in the listings every once in a while, but never been able to catch it again. I'll have to rent it one day.

I wouldn't have remembered it this long either except for the fact that I've read the book, once to myself and then out loud to my husband, and my son gavae me the boxed set of DVDs last Christmas. It's all really great, so maybe if you get a chance you ought to refresh it in your memory. Thanks for responding!

I can't remember how old I was when I saw it but I do remember watching every minute of it. I thought it was a great eye opener for someone who maybe did not know how terrible life was for the slaves. It is beyond me how one person can treat another person so horribly.

I showed parts of it to my Kindergarteners last year when we talked about slavery, because just reading books about it wasn't sinking in, and they were fascinated. I know the movie made a real impression on them about how to treat other people. Thanks for responding!

I enjoy it, too. It never makes me particularly happy to see O.J. Simpson, but he was in it for a short time. The whole show was amazing, and the book is even better! Thanks for responding.

It was originally on in 1977, so you're undoubtedly too young to remember that. Someone here said that it had been reshown at least once. You can probably rent it from a video place. I highly recommend it, especially if you like history. It's a true story.

Would you believe I own the book Queeny but have never read it. I'll have to dig it out of the packing boxes and read it. Thanks for reminding me. And, yes, I preferred the book to the mini-series, but for people who don't read, I still recommend the show.

Alex Halley's "Roots" - Alex Halley's "Roots"
I very much remember the TV series and the book. It sparked interest in gemology.. You mentioned a need for more movies for families like "Roots” At that time there were several mini-series. Have you seen and or read "Centennial"? written by Mitchners'1978 it’s an epic of the settling of the western states. I would guess it covers close to 100 years. The story is fictional but it portrays the way the western states were settled the state of Nebraska, Wyoming, and Colorado. We have a number of mini series in our library

I loved Centennial too. I've read other John Jakes series, bit none compared to this one.

I didn't watch it then. I think it was the 70's or maybe the 80's. I get very upset when I watch the mean ways that humans treat other humans and animals.

Most books are. Look at the Harry Potter books. The movies aren't nearly as good. There just isn't enough time in a movie to include all of the plot lines from a book. That's why I much prefer the books. Thanks for your opinion.

Yes, I remember it. I was probalby 10 or 12??? We really thought it was done well. I did read the book too and was fascinated with the way people thought and behaved. I am reading "Carribean" by Michner and it's got a lot of the slavery issues in it also - very interesting.

I remember it. I remember being emotionally empty after seeing it. I was blank. It was so different and shocking at the time. It was horrible and wonderful at the same time. Nowadays nothing is left to the imagination, it's sort of sad. I'd liked that time in television better.

Oh yes I remember it very well. I saw it when it was first aired and then a few times afterwards. I saw it in the one Blockbuster about a year ago to rent and thought about doing so especially for my niece to view it. I thought it really showed how some things were back then and to give her some ideas of the history of our Country. I didn't have the money at the time to rent the full series since each part was a seperate rental but I'd still like her to see it.

We watched it in my African-American History class last year. I thought it was great, but terribly sad. Of course I suppose a view on a slave's life should be sad. It almost made me cry. I would definitely recommend watching it to anyone who can get their hands on it..it's on video!

My mom rented some a few of the tapes when we were younger. I can't remember it because I was pretty young. But my mom said that it was really good.
