Books are the Building Blocks....but

Books, humor

People have used books as a door stop, and support for the broken leg of a chair or table. But this has really taken this practice to the next level. I believe this guy (I'm assuming a sports jock since he has no interest in intellectual pursuit) took this quotation about books having a strong backbone quite literally. (books do have a spine) "Books are precious things, but more than that, they are the strong backbone of civilization. They are the thread upon which it all hangs, and they can save us when all else is lost~ Louis L'Amour Besides reading, do you use books for other purposes?

I do not use books for other purposes. If the book I read was not interesting, I donate, if not I keep to re read in the future.

@josie_ My vision is also not as good as it used to be, I read less in the evening before sleeping. We had a horribly hot summer, we could not stay outside because it was too hot and the mosquitoes seem to particularly appreciate me.

@LadyDuck You must have acquired this habit of reading before sleeping many years ago. Difficult to change even if it is detrimental to your vision. Mosquitos are a bane anywhere. I read somewhere that they are attracted to the color white. Maybe darker clothing if you decide to stay outside?

I have to admit my library of books has gathered dust. My vision is not as good as before but maybe I could read some portion of a book that is inspiring or food for thought when I have my coffee outside my small garden where there is sunshine. I've been musing about this idea for some time but unfortunately, the weather is not cooperating.

Yes, as a temporary pillow when I took a nap inside my classroom before.

As students we all experience lectures by boring teachers.

@josie_ I was a teacher in a Barrio school. After I ate my lunch, I took a short nap and used the books as my pillow.

I do not remember when it was the last time I read a book. I do not know what else a book is used for

I use a few books under my computer monitor so it sits high enough for me to see properly. Not all books are educational or have a real value. Many these days are works of fiction written by many people who simply want to entertain and earn money. I find that many books are more about the authors opinions rather than beneficial reads. What I do enjoy are books written by pros like anthropologists who are simply explaining what and where they found relics and bones and how old they are.

@rebelann I hope I have the cognitive ability to differentiate was true or not, possible or improbable. If all else fails there are fact-checking sites available.

I have only ever used books to read. As for this guy, I guess he can tell onlookers, "There is a story behind this repair job."

Maybe you meant to say "There is a storybook behind this repair job."?

@josie_ Perhaps. But it would not have fit the joke. We often say, "There is a story behind that." We would never say storybook. In fact, I don't think I hear many people say that ever.

@porwest It was a kind of pun between the photo and the sentence "There is a storyBOOK (in this case books) behind the repair job"(literally). But I got your joke.

There was a time in my younger days when I spent many hours looking over books in second-hand used book stores.

@Beestring Money was tight and my allowance didn't afford me the luxury of buying brand new books. In those old musty bookstores, the proprietors didn't mind our hanging around reading the books even if we didn't purchase any.

Since they are made of paper, I'm not sure how durable they will be; they might just wilt and crumble away, which would completely defeat the point.

Perhaps it was a stopgap improvision until a more permanent solution could be implemented.

Somewhat I think it is a waste to use books in this way. If the owner think these books are useless, it is a better idea to donate them.

Despite the many resources on the internet. It's quite different holding a book to read. Too bad many young people no longer read books for knowledge and pleasure.
