The U.S. and the Holocaust

I am sitting and watching Ken Burns' The U.S. and the Holocaust. This is the third episode. I suspect this will make many Americans uncomfortable. Our anti-semitism, our inaction, our sense of isolationism are clearly set out in this series. I say "our" not because I was there, but because so many of those thoughts, sensibilities, and actions or inactions are still so present here in this place and in this time. But now, brown skin is substituted for Jewish stars and badges. How is it that we care so little for the lives of others in the name of isolationist border concerns, or in the name of supporting our own prejudices? Have we learned nothing?

You're right. We haven't learned a thing. The news is evidence of that.

I would have thought that we could have learned to self-reflect and pause a bit more before we react badly to an event--but it doesn't seem so to me either

@divalounger I don't think they teach that history in school anymore.

No, unfortunately I think it is part of human nature.

Maybe it is a part of human nature that can be overcome.

@divalounger I think if we could overcome it, we would have by now.

I do agree with you on that one. We as people need each other to survive.

We do--but I am not sure that we as a species will survive. We do so many things to mitigate against it

We never learn from history. We make all the time the same mistakes. We do nothing to prevent wars, we seem to incentive hate and we put people against people. We are now living in a very bad historical time.

I agree that this is a bad time we are living through. In some ways, this took me by surprise. I think, as I look back, that it shouldn't have.

We are slow to learn and prejudice is passed on to new generations. Anti-Semitism is still very much alive in the US as well as other racial matters too.

No most have not learned anything we keep doing the same thing over and over. Everyone is the same inside. It is to bad that people are not all treated the same.

I am at a loss around all this. How can we not care more for each other. On another note, I just noticed that you are in Roseburg, I have relatives in Sutherlin--Take care

Man truly has not learned anything over the years as there are still prejudices and wars.

I truly don't understand how we keep going down the same road over and over again. Isn't that the definition of insanity?
