When poverty strikes, love flies off the window

Have you ever experienced in life the truth of the saying: "When poverty strikes, love flies off the window? Have you proven this to be true or not? In my case, I can say that I have proven that when poverty strikes, true love comes to the fore. Yes, my hubby and I started poor, we still are not that rich in terms of monetary gains, but we choose to meet the occurrence as a challenge to prove our love for each other. By the way, we're rich in terms of happiness, and that's what counts. Richness does not only come from monetary rewards. Instead of blaming one another because of our lack of money, we worked hard and tried to get by encouraging each other and saying that as long as we had each other by our sides, we would triumph with whatever life will hand us. We stayed united and happy because nothing else matters except that we were holding hands, giving each other the much-needed support to survive. We were happy no matter what the circumstances were because we were together. We had viewed the trials and financial difficulties we had as challenges and learning processes to strengthen our bond, and had embraced them happily, looking at the brighter side of events. There are always lessons to be learned. And we indeed survived with flying colors. We're now stable with all of our kids becoming professionals and presently working successfully in their respective fields. Hence, I have disproved the aforementioned quote. Instead, I believe that it should be the opposite: "when poverty strikes, true love comes to the fore!" What about you Have you had similar experiences like this? You may share them with us and let's all learn positive things from our discussions. Thank you in advance. Photo is mine.

I think that is usually what happens when the couple are not really ready when they tie the knot. They would always based on wealth or contribution each has made to the union as their basis of love for each other. But if you married the right person what you contribute big or small should be appreciated and be grateful for it.

@queenlyd I think that is a given in every Christian marriage. That is always said in the ceremony that they should place Christ at the center of their relationship. But as married life is full of challenges especially when finances are talked about, we sometimes forgot that ideal setup in married life.

I think it’s according to the couple and how well they support each other. The saying is, It takes two to tango.

I like this sharing of experience. I have never been in a situation like that but the vows were for richer for poorer.... and as you said true love will come to the fore in times of testing, Glad you guys crossed it. This is a Jamaican slang which means you made it. So happy for the end result of true love.

I'm glad you have a good, strong marriage. We have one as well and started out without much too. Today we are comfortable and retired.

When two people work together than a lot can be done and with love you do not need a bunch of money as long as you are happy.

Right, monetary wealth cannot compensate for emotional and spiritual satisfaction.

I think financial troubles can put a strain on any marriage. But, being committed to one another you overcame the poverty issue by not letting it define you. Instead, your focus was on each other not material things. Showing respect, intimacy, giving, trust and support was your true foundation for success. That is a great testament to what love and marriage should be. Thanks for sharing your story!
