Three's a crowd

Yesterday afternoon, we watched a small group of kangaroos feeding on the hillside opposite our house-sit. As we watched, some of the males fronted up to each other and began to fight. It must have been a bachelor mob of males. Two were fighting and a third one cut in. Those three took it in turns to tackle each other. Meanwhile, two others were settling their differences a short distance away. It would spoil the photos to make a collage of them so I’ll put individual photos up as and when I find something to write about. In this photo, you can see two fighting and the third one about to intervene. The one on the right has both feet off the ground and is about to bring his hind legs up to kick his opponent.

Bachelor mob of males . If you would have not explained the picture, I would have perceived it other way. It seems that the two are playing merry go round and the third one is showing them and instructing them how to do it.. And the fourth one seems to be not bothered by any of them

Certainly the fourth one is very unconcerned, isn't it? And you're right. The third one does look like he's instructing them. Maybe he steps in to show them how it's done.

This is what happens when you put a bunch of boys together and they go out drinking and one of them says something that offends one of the others. Then they start talking trash to each other and the next thing you know a small riot has started.

@JudyEv And the other one called him a mean name like Kanga-Poo or something like that.

@moffittjc Do you think 'Look at the size of your feet' would be an insult or a compliment?

The females make lovely pets but the males can be aggressive and dangerous.

@RubyHawk You're quite right - well, mostly. I don't know of any that may not turn aggressive under some circumstances.

@JudyEv I suppose all animal males are aggressive. Just guessing.

They looked like they are happily playing with each other but in reality, they are fighting over something. Maybe flexing their strength to show who is the alpha amongst themselves.

I can't remember now but you wouldn't know if one is pregnant as the baby is born the size of a jellybean and claws its way to the pouch.

@JudyEv There is something beautiful about them, their beauty strikes me similar to what I see when I see a deer. Kangaroos are the deer from down under I think.

@Juliaacv There are quite a few similarities. Some love them; some hate them. Both destroy crops and gardens and are a danger on the roads.

@JudyEv The cats do the same, a lot of hissing and posturing, but usually not a lot more.

The boxers of the animal kingdom. Someone once said if there are two roos not fighting, they aren't roos. lol I guess the 4th one just doesn't want any confrontation. Or it is the female shaking her head at the absurdity of male behavior. lol

Births occur all year round in the western greys but peaks in spring and summer. Gestation is around 36 days so they are probably getting fairly dinkum about their fights by now.
