Why do they do this?

So, yesterday I got some earbuds I had ordered awhile back. The inner box itself was small, like one that would contain a broach or a pin. Well, the box they sent in was big enough to contain a pair of shoes. Correct me if I am wrong, but wouldn't be more expensive to send a bigger box? Plus now I have another box hanging around. I might use, it but more likely I will take it to be recycled. Weird packing seems to be the order of the day.OK, I guess with the box situation they are probably just paying the bulk rate, which doesn't worry about the size of boxes...but I kinda do.

Jay told me that those smaller boxes get lost in the shuffle. They use bigger boxes for small items, so they don't come up missing. The weight is basically the same, how the pricing is calculated.

@snowy22315 It's all based on the item's weight, those boxes are just to contain the product.

It is possible that the company you ordered from is paying for shipping based on the weight of the package rather than the size. In this case, the size of the box would not affect the cost of shipping. It is also possible that the company is using a box that is larger than necessary in order to provide extra protection for the earbuds during shipping. While it might seem wasteful to use a larger box, it is important to ensure that the product arrives in good condition. If you are concerned about the environmental impact of using a larger box, you could consider recycling the box or repurposing it for another use.

They pack the smaller box in a bigger box so that there is no accidents of loss of a smaller box among the other mail.

Unless there more than buds in it, that does seem a bit excessive.

Shipping is so expensive now. I hate having to cram more cardboard into my overloaded recycling toter.

It is just something else to drag in for recycling

Kharla's explanation is interesting. I wouldn't have thought of that. It still seems a bit of a waste.

My husband commented about the same thing about a month ago. Such a small box inside a huge one. I assume it was just the smallest box they had at the time.
