Eggs are a luxury now

Went to Trader Joe's yesterday and while there thought I'd get some eggs as they are cheaper than in other places. Or so it used to be. A carton of regular large brown eggs is now over $5 so didn't buy them. They used to be in the three dollar range. The Russian store near me sells large cage-free Amish eggs for $4.59. These are actually the cheapest eggs out of all eggs they sell. At first I was going to get them but then decided not to as they were not on sale and I thought I still had half a carton left. Turns out I only had four eggs left. Will have to go back to the store and get eggs. Hopefully, they still have them. I don't want to end up getting another brand and spending even more money on them. Why are eggs so expensive now? I remember seeing a meme on FB with a carton of eggs and the text saying something like just one more payment and I am done paying for my eggs.

"43 million egg laying hens have been lost since the outbreak of avian flu in February of 2022."

@lovebuglena No, it's about not having hens to lay eggs.

@DaddyEvil So the prices are so high because there aren't enough hens?

I know what you mean. We're seeing high prices here as well. Aldis had a pretty reasonable price for a dozen and then all of a sudden, seemingly overnight the prices went up considerably. I hope you were able to get a carton of Amish.

@lovebuglena I've never heard of vegetarian eggs before but I suppose you're right; it has to do with the diet. Anyway, I'm glad that you found something with the same price range as the other option.

@lovebuglena Went to the store today. They didn't not have those Amish eggs. But they had vegetarian eggs for the same price of $4.59. Decided to get them. Got them once before and they were not bad at all. I am assuming vegetarian means the chickens are fed a vegetarian diet.

There are three reasons: because of inflation, supply/demand and the fact that thousands of chickens were culled due to avian flu.

I hate this supply/demand thing. Prices are way too high.

Most of it seems tied to a shortage of chickens due to bird flu which forced millions of them to be killed to stop the spread...or so we are being told. When eggs cost this much I simply refuse to buy them. I will eat something else.

For me eggs are what I usually eat for breakfast whether sunny or omelet, or boiled to go with a salad. I eat eggs many times a week and limit myself to one egg a day when I do. I prefer brown jumbo eggs but settle for large ones as they are cheaper. So they killed all them chickens (even the healthy ones) just to prevent the spread?

@lovebuglena Don't get me wrong. I love eggs, and prior to all of this ate them often. I just don't need them and so I refuse to pay the price. But yes. They had to kill the chickens.

@porwest Have seen numerous interviews with chicken farmers (the ones that have the real answers) and they said it has to be in the feed. Many local farmers in my area that I know personally have said the same. The chicken feed is causing the hens not to lay eggs. Now explain that one. I can but I don't care to be attacked today.

Our egg prices here are all over the place. From maybe $3 something to nearly $7. Of course, like everyone else, I think they are priced way too high, but I do know a few people who raise chickens. One has stopped because the cost of the feed was so high, it was cheaper to buy eggs. If a person can manage to get them for $4. a dozen, that averages .33 cents an egg. I have to up my protein intake, so I do eat eggs at times. A serving of protein for .33 cents is still a bargain nowadays, but I know it's hard to afford paying more for anything right now.

I've seen eggs for way more than $7 here. But they are usually organic and maybe jumbo as well.

@lovebuglena Yes, the prices are really inconsistent here. For several weeks, the large organic eggs were the cheapest, even cheaper than different store brands. Very strange. Now, it's rare to even find store brands, they are the first to sell.

Sometimes when there is an inflation, usually the food price will be increasing and the eggs are one of them. I also heard lately Malaysia imported quite a lot of eggs from India as they are lack of the eggs.

Eggs are expensive because the Avian Flu has caused tens of millions of laying hens to be destroyed. It will take a long time to replace them. Until then, eggs will remain pricey.

@lovebuglena Once enough hens reach laying age that the egg supply recovers, prices should come down.

In Indonesia, eggs are also expensive now, around 2 dollars per kilo. And the price of other animal side dishes also rose earlier. Perhaps this is due to the world recession that is predicted to occur this year. Hopefully we can still afford it

Is that the price for half dozen? Though I bet those a very nice eggs Lena. Yes, well on top of the apparent 'shortage' of eggs, people are literally hoarding eggs here..nuts, just like that toilet paper fiasco remember.

I hope people are not hoarding eggs as eggs spoil unlike toilet paper. But yeah, eggs can be hard to find, especially those at a more affordable price.

Eggs are expensive because all over the world, millions of hens had to be killed because of the avian flu. Now we need at least 8 weeks before the young hens start to lay eggs.

@sathviksouvik duck eggs are not available everywhere. I think I saw them in the Russian store. 6 eggs a carton and I think they were around $4. But maybe it’s because they were on sale. I never bought ducks eggs before. Want to try them once.
