The Room that No One Uses

Forgive the horrendous collage, but you’ll get the idea. One of our home projects began last January when we decided to remodel our old family room. No one used this room except me when I used my computer or had the fireplace going, but hubs and I wanted to update the room inexpensively. The painter we hired painted the doors, molding, and chair rails until he developed hip and heart problems. We hired one of his workers eventually. We hired a decorator, because I didn’t know what to do with that long, narrow, dark room with only one window. Along with the materials, she helped us choose a green wool area rug and coordinating paint for the walls. The rug had to be made up specifically to fit the room at an added expense, of course. The recommended painter fixed a twisted beam within the wall and painted the walls a pretty shade of sage green to match the greens in the chairs. He also painted our hideous looking built in wall unit. After weeks of waiting, the area rug arrived. An hour later, the furniture arrived. Unfortunately, the dye lot was way off and the rug looked hideous with the wall color. Our decorator came to help layout the furniture, but apologized for the paint and rug colors. She suggested a few shades of pink for the walls, and once tested, we had to rehire the painter to repaint the walls. We also had to hire a company to haul away our old furniture and my piano. I tried to give the piano away to universities, schools, family, and neighbors, but no one wanted or needed it. Finally, the shades arrived, but the curtain panels didn’t come in until the day after we arrived in Florida. We set up an appointment to finish the job when we knew we’d be back home for 9 days. It’s finally done after one entire year! We are very pleased with our pink walls, white cottage sofa, pink reading chair and hassock, and the tropical fabric on the chairs. Unfortunately, we spent much more than intended on this room that no one uses, but it’s so pretty that we all hang out in it now. I even enjoy reading in my little area and use my computer there. I can’t wait to go home again - kind of

It’ll still be there when it warms up. Stay in Florida. That is a lot of grief to deal with for one room.

I’m not budging from here until the end of April All I dealt with was grief since the day we began our outdoor projects. This room fit in with what happened.

Atleast you did not do what Maggie did in the comic Bringing up Father She had a beautiful vase and she re did the room to match it spending dollars At the end what she saw was the vase did not match and she threw it away.

Thank you! It blends in with our “new” family room. Hence the decorator. Her apologies not withstanding

The white on the cupboards looks so much nicer and brightens things up. I like the green color of the walls so that’s too bad it didn’t go well with the rug and furniture. The pale pink is almost the same color as my house.

@DianneN I can imagine the relief it is over with. My husband is still not finished with our bathroom and it’s been 11 months. Interesting maybe your friend would allow you to share a photo of her pink brick house with me. I have never seen one and it sounds so neat!

@shaggin I texted her and she told me where to find a photo of her house, but not to use her name or address. Here it is, but it is more pink in person.

Thank you. The green went well with the furniture and the colors in the other family room, but the pink also blends in. Nothing is ever simple for us, but happy it turned out well and is done!!! The right shade of pink can be so pretty on houses. There is one not far from my street, my friend has a pink brick house, and there are so many pretty pink houses in Florida.

It looks a lot better now and the pink and sage green colors are a nice combination, they remind the "Art Deco" district in Miami.

@LadyDuck Thank you. The important thing was getting them to go with the other family room next to it. Those were both favorite rooms of Doodles. I even kissed the loveseat goodbye where he sat, especially in his final days.

I'm glad you're all enjoying the end result of the remodel for that room. It's a shame nobody wanted/needed the piano, though.

That is not an atypical home project. So many of them get out of hand financially. Did you ever see the movie "The Money Pit" (1986) with Tom Hanks & Shelley Long? It was a remake of the 1948 Cary Grant film, " Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House." Both are great and quite funny.

Very true. We had problems with having a new lawn put in - which had to be done twice. Yes, I saw both movies

Boy, that must have cost you a bundle to have to do over and over. I wish I could afford one of those rustic type homes that ranchers sometimes have with big fans hanging from the ceiling. Hey, wishing is free so why not, right?

We had to do a lot of things over and over, especially the lawn. What a year and waste of money we had. Sometimes wishes do come true. So keep wishing!

Thank you No one wants a piano when keyboards will do the trick. It was so heavy, that we are happy no one wanted to take it and scratch up our floors. It took 4 professionals to move it. Too many projects to list.
