Years and years ago my first desktop got hit by lightning... Since then I plug everything into shielded/grounded electrical outlets. If your cellphone isn't plugged in, then it doesn't need to be shut off. It doesn't have enough charge to draw a lightning bolt... unless you stand on a high hill and raise your phone above your head and hold it there...

It depends on the severity of the storm. Sometimes we do not need to, but if the storm is really severe, there are times that we have power outage

If the ground on your mains is connected to the ground you don't need to unplug it which is connected to the mains because it can divert lightning.

@ifa225 Some electronics such as televisions, I think, are not connected to the ground and also for cell phone chargers, so they target those with high electromagnetic waves. Generally new technology can counteract lightning up to 10kWh.

I think surge protector is not a common things in Asia. We only put part of electronic's cable in the ground. But not with the lamps. That way, lightning often strikes the lamps here

@ifa225 That's the safest. But if;due to some reasons;you are out of home;then never stay under a tree or in water in a pond or river. These are the places where you are most vulnerable to lightning strike.

We always turn off our TV when there's a storm because its antenna might get hit by lightning because it is usually the highest object on our rooftop. But I don't turn off my phone.
